I don’t see how that would have more of a public freak out than headlines that Italy is enforcing a strict quarantine on 11 communities.

Hey.....I’m trying to help keep it grounded as much as I can.

But you are right, the task feels like this sometimes:

Any suggestions on minor prepping? Just thinking meds etc that might be helpful (though likely not much if any otc will help much).

Tylenol and Advil and hydration stuff..maybe some extra food?

Why does everyone seemingly question everything China puts out EXCEPT the worst case information?

The CCP is motivated to save face and has proven time and again that it will lie and oppress its people when it benefits them (see the case of the deceased Dr who tried to sound the alarm and many others). So yes we doubt the information coming out of China when there are eyewitness reports (some from reputable news orgs) that contradict it.

When the CCP releases info that is negative that doesn’t help its cause, it logically follows they are likely telling the truth as they have no motivation to play up the severity of the virus.

As far as the 27 day incubation, most of us have been skeptical or refrained from commenting. If the disease is widespread, it might be difficult to trace all potential sources and know what the true max incubation period is.

I'm loving this thread. I live and work in Asia and it is interesting to see what Americans are perceiving about the virus. I guess it is predictable, but still interesting.

I don't know what to perceive about the virus because the information is all over the place. But, seeing you live and work in Asia do you have any info about it to share?

1)have recipes handy that use a lot of canned/bottled food products. Ideally ones good enough you use in your day to day. Stews, soups, pasta, and slow cooker recipes make great prep meal benchmarks. LA folks have a bit of benefit due to the high prevalence of rice in our normal diet, which is an easily stored staple. Just need to come up with ways to flavor it without getting boring.

2)purchase groceries, packing and freezing some perishables for later use

If nothing significant happens, just consume the products as part of your day to day routine

Essentially ask yourself what do you need to have in the house to make it so not a single person has to leave for a period of time. Unless you are in a high risk factor for the virus, 2 weeks seems reasonable right now.

Don’t go all doomsday apocalypse prepping and get camping gear. Assume you will still have power and running water. Even if it does go “bad” you still will for the bulk of the crisis.

Make sure you do math and not feelings however. You’d be surprised how much 2 weeks of food is especially if you are talking about covering a family.

Right now South Korea has 5 deaths on 600 cases. Again as mortality is a lagging indicator (and it will be weeks not days until we know reality) the rate will worsen. Just using current estimates it’s around 5 times deadlier than the flu (1% mortality vs 0.2%), but that could easily jump much higher.

The window on containment isn’t closed yet, but it is quickly closing.

I forgot you moved to HK. From talking to friends over there it sounds like it’s slowed down... not as much panic and worry as 3-4 weeks ago.

Rice, dried beans, iodized salt. If it hits an urban area, people will panic and you don’t want any piece of that.

FWIW:

My MIL (lives in Japan) just messaged us some info. She has a friend whose nephew is a PhD that researches viruses in China. He was sent to Wuhan to study the virus. He sent her a long message detailing his results in it, but the gist is something like this, from what I understand:
The virus does not cause a runny nose or cough as symptoms of it. Between 26 and 27 degrees Celsius (and above) the virus won’t survive. Drinking hot water and exercising are a good way to kill the virus in your body. A vaccine is not necessary.

Turkey and Afghanistan just closed their borders with Iran. Yeah, we’re just frustrated.

It sounds like anything.

I’m extremely skeptical of all social media based insight because of how often faked info went on here.

I don’t see anything to disprove this particular vid...just basing it on the past entries.

Only counter is situational: if it were this bad, the Chinese would have cut them off. Otherwise, we would be hearing about it on the news and not just one guy uploading video.

Can’t read the Chinese to dig into the story like the French tweet earlier lol

I think there is much less panic, but people still are avoiding crowds and mostly working from home if they can. I just left Central for dinner and it was super quiet. Even the bar and club area was empty. Maybe it's numbness or just that after 3 weeks we've gotten into a routine, but I don't hear the fear as much as when it started.
The toughest part is that schools have been cancelled since Chinese New year and will stay closed until at least March 16. So the kids are restless and parents are frustrated.

Otherwise, we get the same news as the rest of the world. We have a lot more mainland Chinese, though. So if you speak Mandarin or have a certain dialect, people avoid you.

I have seen a couple references to the temperature barrier. If true, then spring can’t get here fast enough for everyone in the northern hemisphere.

Might also explain why Australia has not seen much activity despite having a large Chinese population and is relatively adjacent to China.

Stupid question coming up...

So the virus will not survive in the body? Is that similar to say the flu virus?
