Munich is a layover for us on our way to and from Croatia. On the way back, I’ll have a whole day and I’m staying the night in Munich before I fly back to the US the next morning.

I’m looking for recommendations on what to do/see during the one day, and where to stay/what part of town to stay for the night. We don’t need a super nice hotel for the night as it’s only going to be a bed for one night.

You could get a night at the Hilton Munich Airport and avoid any further travel at the end of your trip. Take the S8 to the city for the day.

The Augustiner Keller Biergarten near the main train station is worth a visit. If your flight home is early, I agree with the airport area hotel and train into the city.

I would probably start with a beer hall then proceed with a couple of beer halls before finishing up my trip with a beer hall

If you don't want to stay by the airport but still want to get there easily. There is a Holiday Inn near the city center which is on whatever subway line goes to the airport. The hotel is above the station, I have stayed there a few times its across the river from Marienplatz and close to a lot of stuff.

What is your Croatia itinerary looking like? Currently planning a trip now for June.

Have a Catamaran chartered out of Split for 1 week and we’re going to hit up all the islands around there (haven’t pinned down exact stops but will be talking to the captain in a couple months to figure it out). Not sure yet if we’re going to make it to Dubrovnik.

Saturday to Saturday on the boat. Renting a car after we get off the boat and will go to Krka National Park then drive to Plitvice for the night. Up early the next morning to spend the day in the park then driving back to Split for Sunday night when we fly out Saturday morning.

I recommend doing a bike tour of the city... it is informative and quick way to hit the major highlights. You would still have half a day to hit any beer halls after. It's a popular thing in Munich.

Sounds solid. we are looking at mostly a car tour, but may opted for renting a boat for a few nights.

Tip 1: Admire the New Town Hall and other architectural buildings in famous Marienplatz

Marienplatz has been Munich’s central square since the city’s foundation, and until 1807, it a marketplace.

The New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus), located in the very center of Marienplatz, is the symbol of Munich, the most notable and striking construction of the city. This Neo-Gothic Town Hall was built by the order of King Ludwig I from 1867 to 1909 on the site of demolished houses.

Pay your attention to the fascinating clock on the Town Hall with 43 bells and 32 figures in human growth, which every day represent the scenes from medieval life. This performance takes place daily at 11 am and in the period from May to October at noon and at five o’clock in the evening.

Tip 2: Visit Old Picture Gallery (Alte Pinakothek) and BMW Museum

Tip 3: Visit famous Munich churches

Tip 4: Visit Schwabing, Munich’s bohemian and artistic quarter

Tip 5: Walk around Prater Island and visit Museum Island

Tip 6: Have a perfect picnic in English park and walk around Olympic Park

Tip 7. Go down in the well-known Munich metro

Tip 8: Taste authentic Bavarian beer and Weisswurst, preferably at Oktoberfest

Munich is a diverse city. It uniquely combines observation towers with Gothic architecture, modern buildings of automobile factories with old bridges, as well as many parks and greenery. You can find all this and more recommendations here https://www.besttrips.tours/interesting-things-to-do-in-munich/

A lot of good advice here, but I have a couple of comments. I work in Schwabing and there's no longer any bohemian flair to find there. Not worth the valuable time. I take the metro every day and there's a lot of construction going on; it's pretty punctual, but nothing to write home about. The Alte (and Neue) Pinakothek are cool, and not far from Marienplatz. Königsplatz is also interesting, with some cool (and free) Greek art.

I would start the day with breakfast at the Viktualienmarkt (a local food plaza with beer tables) - next door to Marienplatz - and go up in the tower of the Alter Peter Church for a great view of the central city (lots of stairs, though). See the Glockenspiel at the Town Hall and maybe see the Bavarian Hunting Museum, then walk or take the S-Bahn to Central Station and walk 10 minutes along Arnulfstrasse towards the central bus station to the Augustiner Bier Garten, it's across the street. There aren't many tourists there, totally authentic.

Even the Hofbräuhaus would be worth a visit. For a day I wouldn't try the Englisch Garten or Olympia Park (pretty boring, actually, the Olympia Park). A bicycle tour originating from the Central Station looks interesting, but I've never done it. They do an English-speaking tour to different beer bars.

The weather will determine about 80% of your activities. When it's sunny and warm, Munich is beautiful. When it's raining and cold like today, you just want to get out. Luckily I live about 40 miles away in a smaller town, so I have the best of both worlds in Bavaria.

Piggybacking on this thread rather than starting a new one.

I've added on 3 nights to the end of a work trip this summer in Munich and I'm flying out of Zurich. Is my best option to take a bus from Munich to Zurich? I can use a work credit on a flight but it connects in Paris instead of being direct so I'd lose half a day, or is my best option to rent a car?

First trip to mainland Europe so wandering how comfortable I'd be driving around that area.

I would take the train and enjoy the scenery, but driving is easy and faster. Don't be intimidated by driving in Europe, the roads are great and we drive on the right. If you pick up the car at the airport it will be interstate (Autobahn) all the way to the border.
