One beef about last nights BB game

Last possession of regulation time and all we do is clear it out for a Mays dribble-Drive. Had a time out in our pocket and just hoped he’d get something off by himself, and we didn’t even get a shot off. I realize he did it last week but damn, that’s a strategy that won’t work every time.

ummmm..if you have a strategy that WILL "work every time"...you should be a very wealthy basketball coach.

I was fine with the call. WW didn’t call a TO to keep Buzz from getting the defense set and he put the ball in the hands of his SR leader.
Mays was just indecisive. He obviously wanted to pull up for a game winner, but didn’t sell the drive hard enough to get space. shite happens sometimes.

I have watched Skyler Mays successfully take the ball to the hole too many times to say this was a poor strategy. He frequently scores or gets fouled in the process and makes the freebies.
I have no issue with our strategy, the defender just did a great job stopping Mays.

With the way we get offensive boards and put backs, he has to get a shot up with time left to get a board. Attack with 10 seconds is the goal.

Aggies hung with us on the boards and that was before Days fouled out. I had no issue either playing it down.

I know what your saying and it is frustrating. Sorta like watching our old fb coach running out to TOs, but opposite.

Mays took it by himself against State, A&M defended him, perfectly, and it should have been a charge on Mays. In a perfect world, he should have started his move 2seconds earlier, passed it to Watford, who drives, or passes baseline for the offside wing that was standing alone under the basket for the dunk. With everyone trying to stop Mays, cause they knew he was going to try to do it on his own( like last game) Court was wide open. But we won, everything worked out. Depth now a problem moving forward

If this bothers you than you haven't watched much of LSU since the arrival of Will Wade. He does this every time. He trust his guys more to get off a good shot, without allowing the defense time to set up. It's worked plenty.

at least just throw it up there
to not get a shot off was bad

Lol if it would have been a designed play for someone else you’d be the first guy saying “Skylar just won’t it for you last week, why doesn’t he get the ball”

That is execution...not "strategy". The "strategy" was not, I am confident in saying, to "not get a shot off".

I'm ok with not calling a TO in late game situations because doing so also allows the defense to get set.
Wade clearly takes the approach of "players over plays" in those situations. Meaning, he's simply going to put the ball in the hands of his best playmaker and let him try to make a play to win it.
Now, I'd like to see a little more player movement away from the ball in those sets in order to maybe free up a guy in the event Mays gets stoned (like what happened last night). But I think most coaches would agree that, even in a set play, the goal is to get the ball in the hands of your best player. Wade just does it without calling a TO

The problem with the last possession was that Mays was looking for a foul instead of trying to get his best shot off and didn’t get the call.
He did that the whole last 90 secs and the refs just kept letting them play.
That’s my only issue. You can’t assume or try for a foul on a last possession.

WW in the past, seems to let the play happen. Obviously it is a philosophy, many coaches would call the TO here and set up a play which also allows the D to set up, and others do not. I see the advantage to both ways. Skylar Mays style of play is so much fun to watch. Give the ball to the play maker and take your chances.
