I honestly dont know... and if i’d Asked him for specifics, he’d have surely given me his side of the story, while conveniently leaving out the company’s , and whatever side the truth might be on. My point still stands that most people will badmouth unions til they need one.. Maybe those people should realize that, while far from perfect, unions are more useful than they are counterproductive... I think that’s the crux of the issue; we can all agree that some lazy people fall through the cracks.. but i’m on the side that says those people are the exceptions, and for the vast majority, unions are effective.
I will also say it depends on the business the unions are for. There absolutely are that are helpful and also some that are not.
I'll just say unions in the federal government are good for certain situations but overall, they are not. I have seen more bullshite on the negative side than positive. And to be fair, there has been a few circumstances where it has been positive.

If you are a top half individual, it hurts.
If you are a bottom half individual, it helps (minus the fees).
If you are a top 15%er, it kills you.
If you are a bottom 15%er, you love it.

I’m in a union. It is a condition of my employment. I have a positive view of my union.

I have a buddy who is an electrician in Beaumont that is in one. From what he has explained to me, it's a big help in that field.

One of the most ridiculous concepts in unions is the seniority concept. Once you've been at the company for awhile, you will never get fired. Even if the people behind you are more efficient and have a better work ethic than you.
I've seen this comment multiple times.
Might be true in some places but not all.
I was in a union for 10 years. If you didn't do your job or had a tardy or attendance problem you were going to be put in the system and taken care of accordingly.
It was the people who were on time but did just enough that were safe although the bosses rode those people hard.
I didn't seek out a union job, it just worked out that way.

If all these people work in the same job then they all have the same working conditions.

Unions are a joke now. Coming from someone who used to go toe to toe with their imbecile leadership

True and add all other the federal government agencies too.

yup.
I agree with whoever in this thread stated that public industries shouldn't have unions. there's no point, they can't share in any profit since the industry they work in isn't profit-based.

I was very anti-union growing up even though my mom and dad both belonged to one. I had a very wise professor in college (very conservative) that sold me on the idea that there were bad companies before there were bad unions and that in a perfect world unions wouldn't be necessary. I think there is room for both if they are really working for the interests of the people.

I have no issue with the concept of private sector unions, but I do object to their ongoing legal recognition in the US.
Groups of employees joining together to advocate for themselves/their industry = great
Complicated and cumbersome legally-recognized blocs with a whole sphere of governmental involvement/regulation = less great

I was anti union until I saw productivity rates with a former employer (as director of marketing) involved in industrial construction work. Offices were in Houston, Tampa and Buffalo. Only Buffalo had union workers and productivity was higher with better safety. On a cost per unit, union labor was the most productive.
What I like about union is the apprenticeship program for the trades.
BA's and union attorneys definitely live it up on the dues from members.

Don't forget union training programs which are beneficial.
What the frick kind of training does one need to set at a frickin desk and never make a decision on anything other then whether to frick off or not

I think at one point in time unions had a time and place and provided a value to works being mistreated by employees. I have worked several places union and not makes for a them vs us mentality typically because the wrong people are the face/voice of the union. My experience is a me, me, shite on the company type group that only protects shite works that most of their peers would want gone anyway.

works at a plant and got fired
Getting fired doesnt entitle you to getting unfired just because you belong to a union. Employers should be able to fire you.
I worked at a union plant but wasn't in the union. I saw several people fired for damn good reason and then show back up a few months later.
