I'm in a hunting camp in Washington Parish, this is only my second year. I've come to learn that the mindset is "if it's brown it's down" which really bothers me. I understand it, "If I don't shoot it, the yahoo in the next lease will"

I'm torn. I love finally having a place to call my own, but I really would love to be a part of something (if it even exists around here) that actually manage the deer and let them mature.

Pros:
I have 2 of my own stands
It's only 40 minutes from home

Cons:
See above

Any thoughts?

You actually owns the lease? That's who's opinion really matters.

Between this
quote:

"if it's brown it's down" which really bothers me. I understand it, "If I don't shoot it, the yahoo in the next lease will"

and this

quote:

I have 2 of my own stands
I could not be in it.

You have to evaluate what you want out of hunting. If you want to maximize the potential of the deer on a peice of land and work on killing big mature bucks, you need to be hunting in an AREA that shares your goals. That may involve traveling a lot farther.

If you are a weekend warrior who wants to casually hunt and have a few successful days then just go with it and take what you can get.

We all envision this utopia where everyone hunts 5 yo bucks only but that is not reality and never will be.

If you’re not happy with the way it’s managed and want to shoot mature deer, move on before you become more invested. There’s other leases with what you’re looking which may cost more and be harder to get on. They’re out there though. Better ones normally have a waiting list and won’t be advertising.

You have equipment? Tractor?

May have an opening next year. We have several bucks in the 130-150 range and one that is potentially 160.

Downside is no camp. May look into renting a place for the season next yr.

Yeah, my biggest fear is getting out of this one, which will have someone to replace me in a heartbeat, and not being able to get back in. I was pretty lucky to get in this one and my son is just getting to the age where he wants to go more with me. Maybe with him being 6 I'll just stick with it for now and when he gets old enough to hunt himself, we can search for something better together.

Where is it? I don't have a camp to stay out now, but it's close to home so not a big deal.

About 2-2.5 hrs from you. I have been trying to get in a local club for awhile and have had no luck. Been trying for Bedico Creek Hunting Club put they haven't had any openings, its cheap and close to the house though.

Mature deer in Washington parish are hard to come by I been here my whole life and I am in a constant battle with my neighbors about shooting mature deer. We have progressed from anything with a horn to 2 yr old but that’s about all I can get out of them. They all say “if I don’t shoot it the neighbors will” which is all bullshite

Not really.

These woods get pounded. The hunter density in Washington parish is significant.

Usually the brown and down types tap out early after the initial fun of going to the deer camp is over and it gets cold.

Get high up and on the edge of bedding late in the season, get in early 45 minutes prior to daylight.

Washington parish

Im with you guys. I have 40 acres in north central WP and my family has some surrounding. We dont see many deer but its mine and doesn't really cost me anything.

The downside is I know what deer to expect. I have only taken 2 bucks in 8 years. Family and I agree to shoot 6pt an above but no telling what others do.

Im also thinking about getting in a local club to change up the scenery and because some bordering land got sold and houses went up. I dont need a camp as my property has a house on it.

You just changed the situation a bit. A kid at that age wants to shoot. If you transfer to a new lease and tell them they can’t shoot say a 2 1/2yo 8pt because he’s to young it may change his taste in hunting. Every child is different obviously but just some food for thought.

shite, if they have any come open I'd wanna try to get in too. Having a place 10 minutes from home would be nice
