I have a question for those of you that start with seed indoors. What are you fertilizing your starts with? I read that you should start feeding when the first set of true leaves develop.
Found this at my local Home Depot. Use it once a week.

I am going to see how they each do with some extra pepper seeds that I have. I'm not looking for power savings or anything, just how they look after about 6-8 weeks and how much I had to fiddle with the lights, watering, and such.
Great idea. I know one thing for sure, my light has made a huge difference this year compared to previous years. 4' x 4 bulb T5HO 6500k. A quick google search shows one 4' T5HO bulb in that spectrum is about 5,000 lumens. So, apparently it's a 20,000 total lumen light fixture (which is what it claims). And I have tomato plants over a foot tall after a month.

Thanks. How long have you been using it? I have read that a slightly higher Phosphate than Nitrogen and Potash. Something like a 1-2-1 ratio is better for seedlings but I have no clue honestly.

Yeah I have a fixture like that sitting in my Wish List on Amazon right now for $85. It will probably be my next purchase. That or a large full spectrum system to see if I can grow peppers and tomatoes indoors year round. The boss lady does not want a green house in the backyard so the spare bedroom is my lab and play place.

Started using it last year. Was satisfied with the results so I got some more this year.

That’s probably true.
I just wanted something low dose. Found that stuff and ran with it.
This is after 5 weeks of seeds sown.
Pretty much all of my tomato plants had outgrown the 4” peat pots. So I put them in gallon containers and started bringing them outside. Got them back under the lights for the next couple of days because of the cold weather.

That looks great! I only hope I can get mine to look like that. Mine are only a week in so far and they are still in their large pellets. I used the Burpee tomato starter kit with the larger pellets and have pots ready to move them when they are ready. Next time I will probably just start out with the 3 or 4" pots.

It takes up a lot more room initially. That's the downside. If you have a lot of plants, you need a lot more lighting.

Yeah, that's why I started smaller. This season will determine how I go from here. I am trying out some 20 gallon grow bags for potatoes and tomatoes. I am also going to try some 20 gallon wicking tubs for tomatoes and possibly some cucumbers. Growing cucumbers out of a 55 gallon drum looks really interesting as well but I don't think it would work in our heat outside.

Starts look great Pillage. I'm a couple of weeks behind you, but just potted up all of my tomatoes and peppers over the last couple of days. Also started some zucchini and cucumbers.
My tomato starts don't look the best, but once I get them out of that Orta seed starter they normally take off. The Orta starters are really excellent from a convenience standpoint, but IMO they keep the soil a bit too wet. It's fine for a while but they definitely show it when they need to be potted up.

I use half strength Urban Farms Vegetable Fertilizer. It's the same company that makes Texas Tomato Food, but it's a more general NPK. I've been happy with it.

I do the same with the supplies I want and just try to wait out for a deal at some point. This summer I plan on re-arranging my tool room to free up a large shelf so I can expand. My light source is definitely not strong enough so I will be looking to upgrade when I have the room.
The fixture pillage mentioned seems like a perfect fit for the shelf I want to free up...weird!

Is it this one?

The one above is what I bought and I did the same. At one point it got down to $73 and I pulled the trigger on it.

Yup, my wife won't be happy at all
Although she has warmed up to this hobby a bit ever since I made some pepper jelly and salsa a few weeks back.

Yeah, my wife said I turned her craft room into a greenhouse/chemistry lab.
But same with her. She enjoys the produce, so she don’t mind so much.

Yup, and if it get's in the $70's it will be mine. Even if it sits in a box this season. I'm sure I would need a supplemental light source for the flowering and fruiting phase, if I try growing to harvest indoors. But, it will upgrade my system for next years planting. Or possibly this fall. I may also try herbs and lettuces indoors this year.

I have another question, are any of you using a little fan in your grow room to stimulate stronger plants? I have a little clip on fan that I am thinking of trying. I am just wondering if it matters either way.
Posted on 2/6/20 at 3:41 pm to convertedtiger
I kept the ceiling fan on medium speed. Just enough to make them move a little.
Posted on 2/6/20 at 4:19 pm to PillageUrVillage
Thanks. The ceiling fan does not seem to move enough air. I'll give the little fan a go.

She's just happy I moved my operations from the counter in our bathroom to literally anywhere else in the house. She didn't appreciate the lack of counter space while trying to get ready in the mornings

That’s why I built this. Built it last spring I had a lot of treated timber laying around, bought the tin and panels and bought the plastic table tops, had enough to build my own Planters table (same one on Hoss Tools website and they're asking a fortune for). I love it and have plans to put some pavers in front and gravel inside. I use it a lot.
