Why is everyone convinced it is mostly LSU fans donating?

It’s not going to kids. The reality is so different from what you seem to think. These charities go mostly to what they call “homeless” people, what we used to call “winos”. They are people who, for whatever reasons (mostly insanity and drug abuse), have dropped out of society, and the economy, and are living under bridges and such.

I’m not bitching about it. I just find it peculiar that there is this tiny trickle of charity going from Louisiana to Ohio, and there is a giant flow of government transfer payments flowing from Ohio to Louisiana.

Why are kids in Louisiana anymore worthy than ones in Ohio? Might as well get upset that there are poor kids in Kentucky and West Virginia and Mississippi and Arizona that we aren’t donating to

I didn't say that.

Some of it will as families use these banks too but you are correct that it will help those such as you described as well.

I know it was stated in this thread but these donations are going to a food pantry and, if I have my facts straight, the difference is food pantries are designed to sell food at a very low cost to the working poor. I don't know what the hell any of you have against this fundraising drive but if you don't like the idea then don't donate any monies but to actively state that this makes no sense when Louisiana needs help as well is asinine.

Any money that can help others no matter what state or what section of the country is a fine effort and should be supported even if you decide not to donate anything at least support the idea,

No, that's not true. Food pantries, well ones that are a partner agency of a food bank, are not allowed to sell anything. They'd get in huge trouble and would face criminal charges if they're caught doing this. They also distribute USDA commodities and, if discovered they were selling or misusing them, then that's on par with selling SNAP benefits.

eta: Athens Food Pantry was a great place to donate. They're affiliated with a food bank, have a board, and a good web presence. My only worry about the donations was that they were going to a food pantry that could mishandle the funds. Does not look that way at all. That's awesome.

Doesn't necessarily have to be 'working' poor (they are not going to ask them for a payroll stub before they offer assistance); however, you are correct in that there is a difference between a 'food panty' and a 'homeless shelter'.

I have worked both, and the primary difference is that, by and large, the patrons at the food pantry are families AND working poor. That is not to say every person who enters the food pantry looking for assistance fits in one of those categories, but the vast majority of them do.

One of the previous post mentioned that these pantries cater primarily to "winos" and nothing could be further from the truth.

So far off base in both facts and terminology it doesn't even deserve mention. Who says winos anymore? It it 1920?

LSUBR, that's cool. I honestly wouldn't have noticed

How about with the food banks doing so well, we focus on Donating to Colton’s handicap van. They raised enough for a down payment only

I said "think" intentionally. Maybe I am misinterpreting this, but I differentiated a food pantry with a food kitchen. My thought was that this particular charity provides unprepared food to supplement poor families, not free meals for the indigent. I admit that this is an assumption, and that I did not investigate further.

Like you said, a lot of homeless have mental illnesses or drug addictions. Regardless, hungry is hungry.

And you were bitching a little bit.

care to quote some stats regarding # of homeless in Athens County?? gonna go out on a limb here that this will go mostly to families. someone like you always has to come along and try to throw shade on a genuine groundswell fundraiser.

Most impoverished counties in Louisiana and Ohio. Athens county is by far the highest on the list for Ohio. Would be the 7th most impoverished Parish in Louisiana.

some times I think penrod and parmen are the same person IRL. Their posts are generally very similar and both seem to be very negative on any positive news out of LSU. I guess it sucks to be them. If I am wrong or just getting that feeling from errors on my end then I apologize. But if the shoe fits then wear it. LOL

I just came to say thank you, thank you, thank you!!I live 25 miles from Athens. Both my sister and brother in law teach in the Plains. Joey Burrow is a great kid. My brother in law was one of his HS football coaches so I followed Athens his entire senior year all the way to the state finals when they lost a heart breaker to Toledo Central Catholic 55-52. What you all have done is amazing. I'm a huge Buckeye fan, go to most of their bowl games and both playoff appearances but since Joe transferred I can say my 2nd favorite team is LSU. I watched most of the games last year and every game this year. You now have a life long fan in me and always will. Again what you all have did to help Athens Co is purely amazing.

But no one will talk about how cool you are for donating to them

If you are going to make an assumption, that folks are donating to look “cool,” I am going to make an assumption of my own: that people are donating to support a cause dear to JB, who is dear to us because of the pure enjoyment he has brought us for 2 years.

People are not necessarily robbing their Louisiana charitable budget to give to Athens. Many are adding to their giving this year to honor Joe. Seriously, is that a problem? Oh, and thanks for letting your left hand, and all the rest of us, know what your right hand is doing.

Sheesh, not just directed to you, but all the Debbie Downers. If people are doing a good deed, what gives you the right to judge how they are doing it?

You are wrong. My wife grew up not too far from Athens and when she heard about this she told me that her single mother who was a teachers assistant relied on a food pantry like this in her town to keep food on the table for her and her brother growing up. I'm thankful we are in a place now to financially support a cause like this, but certainly wouldn't disparage someone who needs the help.

What kind of person craps on a thread that is genuinely doing good for other people, whether they have a home or not?
