Courses in BR are cheap and always an open tee time somewhere. Get Golf Now and sign up for emails at any courses that have them. They are giving away golf in BR area
Cheap golf is arguably the best part of Baton Rouge

It’s really not hard to respect the course and play in a timely fashion, no matter your handicap. I’m 30 years old and have been playing with a mix of older younger guys for a while. Just don’t be a dumbass and respect the course.

Golf is:
1. Very difficult to master.
2. Start up costs are fairly high
3. Time consuming.
Our culture wants things to be easy, cheap, and fast.
Golf is none of the above.
I like golf, but it may be more of an addiction than a true love.
I think what I enjoy is turning my phone off for a few hours.

Relative to any other activity you would do they are not very high. Hunting, Fishing, Camping, Biking, LSU sports, etc. I guess they are high compared to doing nothing.
But, if you are looking for an activity the cost seem very reasonable relative to other activities especially if you just get some used clubs. You don't really even need golf shoes.
Actually for all you listed it is reasonable compared to any other activity. Unless you compare it to sitting on the couch and watching ESPN.

Time to play a round is the biggest reason I don't play more. Seems like everytime I play I'm behind a 5some that reads every putt like it's the US Open.

. I like to listen to music while I play
Without earbuds ? You actually have a device playing music out loud :

eh, it's not that bad.

I think the biggest reasons people either start golf and quit or just don't get involved at all is it's a hard sport to get good at. You can put all the time, lessons, etc... in to it and if you just don't have "it", you just don't have "it". I think that's a hard reality for some.
I sweep the dew on Saturdays and I'm done and back home around lunch which leaves the rest of the day to do whatever with my wife and kids. I think some people use time as an excuse, golf has always taken 4-4.5 hours for most courses. I get that some can't devote that and if that's the case, fine. Nothing wrong with playing only 9 holes too if it's a game you love.

your cheap and my cheap might be totally different. A top quality course for my budget is Santa Maria.
Sorry I'm not OT Baller status, yet.

In the cart, yes. A few courses have carts with speakers and bluetooth just for that reason.

If you are on a budget there are plenty of courses cheaper than Santa Maria. If you demand Top Quality for cheap then I cannot help you.

I firmly believe one of the biggest reasons that golf is down is that the allocation of men's time has shifted over the past few decades.
When I grew up, and when my dad grew up, Saturday was golf day with the boys. This was standard for decades but doesn't exist anymore. Men take a much more active role in raising the kids and when you only have 1-2 days off work per week, there is no time left.
I have no data to back this up, just an observation

So this time of year you are not pressed for time after work?
When my kids were little, I really played very little golf. Someone else pointed this out regarding men being more family oriented than 40 years ago.
I can play pickleball under the lights, but our golf course does not have lights.
I play about 150 rounds a year.
I also work full time.
Summer is when I get a bunch of rounds in because even if I don’t start until 1830, I can finish nine after work.

My only rule..
A birdie always has honors on the following hole.

When compared to many other similar activities golf is equally time consuming that my other friends do. Hunting, Fishing, LSU Sports, Smoking Meats, Camping/Hiking for example. There are others.
None of my friends are playing pickle ball. I am slow on trends though. So, maybe we are all behind on that. My 68 year old mother loves it though.

I use to have season tickets for Auburn football, but I live more than 3 hours away and it seemed to just absorb a great deal of free time.
I usually go to a game a year now.
You are right about hobbies. Anything can be expensive.
I have not figured out how to play in the dark.
For some reason at our club many of the tennis players have started playing pickleball.
It’s a blast. Our pros have even come out with us some. It’s amazing how much running you do in singles.

I like to listen to music while I play but will turn it down if it bothers someone in the group
Not much bothers me in the golf course, but music of any sort will send me into a blind rage. It’s like people who play music on the beach. Part of the reason I go out there is to escape extraneous noise.

I don’t fight it.
People like to play music while they play.
I just ask for it to be smooth music.
