re: Best Deer Hunting WMA in Louisiana

I've seen more deer hunting 2 weeks in the Midwest the past 2 years then the rest of my life. My point is that Louisiana has that same potential but there are glaring issues, that could be easily corrected, preventing that.

Salmon is a born contrarian. It is his Tigerdroppings shtick.

Limits and land management will never change as long as the "it's brown, it's down" army is the majority of hunters in Louisiana.

You know how to drastically reduce the amount of these kind of people hunting public land? Charge more than $15 to whack 6 one-year old deer. It’s almost as though you recognize the problem, yet don’t want to do anything about it.
Hunting is not a right. It’s a privilege. You have to pay for privileges. Sorry if you can’t afford a few hundred bucks a year to hunt. Or whatever it takes to properly staff and manage WMAs.

Not hunt an entire year and never see deer.

You’d get more meat off the deer if you’d let it get a little bigger than 35 lbs.

I would have no problem paying more to hunt public land if it was managed better. I already do it to hunt public in other states. Matter of fact this will be the first year that I wont get a LA hunting license or hunt in LA at all.

The problem is you think it's as simple as raising a license fee. You damn well know if the commission proposed such an action the public outcry would be overwhelmingly opposed to it. It would never happen.

I can afford it no problem. But you are still failing to see my whole point. People are comparing our public lands to states out west, which is the most ridiculous comparison that can be made. Colorado generated $70 million in revenue from license sales 2 years ago. Gee, I wonder why they have such a well funded department? And assuming their STATE-OWNED public lands are as good as people keep saying, that also makes sense, since of the 23 million acres, they only have to worry about 550k. But they get all of those license sales from people hunting the other 22.5 million acres of federally-owned land. And 83k non-resident hunters (we had ~9600 NR/LA Native/Military licenses sold in 2017).
That's never going to happen here. There were ~36k WMA Permits purchased in 2017; 113k big game license holders. Now throw in bow (27k), duck (54k), and Senior H/F (121k) and you have the 5 most purchased licenses in LA. Throw in basic hunt (152k), and you know what that generated? A whopping $5.3 million.
Why don't we charge more for EVERYTHING? It's not like we are spending a fortune on licenses. Doubling the big game and WMA would generate another $2 million.
But again, you aren't getting anywhere near the Colorado comparison being made. 500k licenses netted them $70 million in 2017. The roughly 500k licenses that we sold netted us $5.3 million. You can't make up that gap just by increasing license sales. It's impossible.
Honestly, the best thing we could do is pass a sales tax like Missouri. That would generate considerably more funding than any license fee increases could. I'm all for increasing license fees, but it can't be the only mechanism.
And this state is so afraid to give anymore money to the government, neither of those things will ever happen.

this is more to do with seasons and limit, rather than public land mismanagement

what?
stating my own experiences makes me a contrarian?
I hunt LA public land. A LOT. I've hunted it my entire life. I grew up in the middle of it. I consider myself knowledgeable on this subject.
And in my experience, LA public land is far better now than it was in the 90s and early 2000s
I can't speak to before then, but if my Dad is right, it was even worse in the 70s

Well considering season lengths and limits are part of management and the deer herd is a public resource I would say it sort of is.
With all of the funding coming from license sales the state will never do anything to decrease sale numbers. It is a slowly eroding cycle that will continue to degrade/hinder our state public lands.

well this extends to private land as well
my main gripe with LA is that our gun season is far too long
which is why I enjoy hunting the bow only WMAs, which unsurprisingly, are also some of the best

I agree with this. I also think some of the "primitive" weapons are laughable.

Thank you. The amount of access on a lot of these WMA's is absolutely ridiculous. On most of them, you can't even get a half mile away from a road or ATV trail. I have no clue why ATVs are even allowed on these WMAs. LDWF could improve the quality of the experience on public lands just by reducing access.
What do you expect to get out of LDWF when the Governor of the state thinks that someone like Charlie Melancon is the man to head up the state wildlife agency? It starts at the top with leadership.

Gun season is too long, limits too liberal and certain WMAs should have age/antler restrictions. Would also love to see a lottery system used is some areas of some WMAs.
We have several large enough and quality WMAs to install 10-15K acrea lottery areas that have higher restrictions and are more intensely managed.

I'd be fine with making all WMAs being bow only with a select few (the larger ones) having like a week long lottery gun seasons
I say that as a completely biased bowhunter

Which ones are bow only? Aside from like a Thanksgiving weekend gun hunt. I know Loggy Bayou is like that.
