Need to decide on the ceilings of our porches. None of them will get direct sunlight so not worried about fading. I like the idea of maintenance free hardie sheets painted but like the look of tongue and groove wood. Only thing with the t&g that concerns me is the maintenance.

Pros/cons/thoughts?

Myself, screw maintenance. Vinyl is the way to go.

I went T&G pine. Looks way better than painted Hardie.

T&G cedar, satin poly and stainless nails. Bombproof. But this was at the beach, so it may be overkill for your place. I like hardie if you are going to paint the ceilings white or porch blue.

I went with v-groove spruce. Painted white. First coat stain blocker to stop bleeding from knots. Looks awesome.

I did t&g pine and painted it. vinyl has come a long way but it still looks like a lower quality finish

I did T&G pine, beaded board. Stained and sealed. Haven't made a year yet, so can't give info on maintenance, but that was my same worry. I was told that hanging Hardie overhead is a no no. I looked at something called "smart board" which was OSB wth a hardie layer. But I think it only comes in smooth finish. Floating hardie seams always looks crappy in the long run.

I had t&g pine on the patios at my last house. Never again. When it needs maintenance, and it will, you will either break your back or be paying a contractor more than the original install cost. Sanding and refinishing overhead sucks.

My house has t&g beaded board from the 1930s. It's pretty low maintenance.
