re: James Harden scored on a nice slam dunk last night but the refs didn't count it (video)

No idea. It's probably one of those "at the commissioner's discretion" type deals.
The play with Harden is more like a random missed goaltending than a what happened in Atlanta with Shaq. There is no way the NBA replays the game or gives Houston the win for that. There would be at least one game every week that would need to be replayed if that kind of precedent was set.

quote:CHALLENGE!
Probably Harden dunking the ball and not getting 2 points for it, don't you think?
Took me less than 30 seconds, or less than 3 seconds.
quote:Challenge!
"He dunked it. Where's the point?"
"Ball came back through. Basket interference."
Did those 2 quick sentences back and forth take over 30 seconds?
quote:That entire sequence is less than 10 seconds, tops.

"No, it didn't."
"OK, then it was goaltending on Harden."
"No, it wasn't. I challenge the call."
"Sorry, your time is up. You can't."

utterly embarrassing. wow. I never been more disappointed in the rockets franchise. Protesting and ref blaming go hand in hand to me and I can never get on board with either one.
This is the Rockets MO.
It's the same team that filed an audit on blown calls vs the Warriors claiming they should have won the series due to bad officiating.
Jeff Van Gundy once ran tot he press cry that a ref told him they were trying to get Yao fouled out in a playoff series vs Dallas for moving screens (that were in fact moving screens) and had to apologize for making it up.

Don't waste time arguing with the ref, just challenge the fact that you didn't get 2 points for the dunked ball that went through the hoop.

I get all that. But it also seems like a pretty easy case of "What? He scored." "Yeah, we better take a look at it." and that's that.
Why didn't THAT happen? They look at worse crap than that all the time.
My point is... it seems like he shouldn't have had to challenge. But, at the same time, he should have challenged and, well, it's Houston and James Harden. so.. HA!

I get all that. But it also seems like a pretty easy case of "What? He scored." "Yeah, we better take a look at it." and that's that. There's really not much to discuss on that front, they botched it, and they acknowledged that they botched it.

I'm just pointing out that D'antoni had a path this one reviewed and overturned and more than likely was just so mad that he initially forgot he could challenge and missed the window. And the idea that he was discussing to get clarification of the call and that took up his 30 second window I'm just not buying. He knew the ball went through, he knew he didn't get 2 points, call the challenge right away, get your 2 points back. All is well.

Ref blaming is always embarrasing.
Yes always.
When you take it to the level of protesting that is taking it even one step further.

It's not like Rox haven't done this before.

Daryl wasn’t an athlete he was a MIT kinda guy, those are usually the types who are quick to blame the officials when they lose. That is a flaw of his.

Watch the video, read the own refs words on what happened. Houston immediately starts arguing and discussing the call with the ref. There is no fricking challenge flag in basketball, you challenge a play by discussing it with the ref. The 30 second window for anyone with common sense would be met as long as the coach starts the dialogue in this window. The fact this braindead ref is saying it was "challenged too later" (thats his own words ), while houston is immediately arguing the call with him, is something only you and maybe slackster could support
I haven't seen video of D'Antoni, but here is the protocol for a coach's challenge - LINK
quote:
To initiate a challenge, a team must call a legal timeout. The coach must immediately signal a challenge by twirling a finger toward the referees
I've seen video of them all pointing down to say the basket went through, but nothing twirling the finger. Granted, I haven't seen video of the timeout yet.

But they cry when coaches argue with them, and post facebook videos of them walking off the field when someone calls them short,
Dude, that was in a little league baseball game and is completely irrelevant since the issue involved fan behavior.

From the NBA rulebook:
Seems pretty straightforward, and if there is video of D'Antoni during the timeout, should be easy to prove.
Call timeout, twirl your finger, done. The referees will either allow the challenge or disallow it.
quote:
• To initiate a challenge, a team must immediately call a legal timeout and the head coach must immediately signal for a challenge by twirling his/her finger toward the referees.
• If a team attempts to challenge an event with no remaining timeouts, the team is charged an excessive timeout, for which the penalty is a technical foul, and no challenge will take place.
• If a team calls a timeout to challenge an event that may not be reviewed, the team will be charged a timeout but retain its challenge.
• As with other replay reviews, in order to overturn the event as called on the floor, there must be clear and conclusive visual evidence that the call was incorrect.

When you put it that way it sounds gay AF.

There’s a difference between saying the refs made bad calls and blaming the refs for a loss. Refs make bad calls every game. That is stating the obvious. It’s when you only blame them when you lose but don’t credit them for any wins is what I can’ get on board with.

I don't really know the rule on this but it seems like that probably should count if it went in and out, no matter where it lands. But I also can't really feel bad for someone who was given 24FTs and shot 4-20 from the 3pt line. If he would have shot 25% from 3 instead of 20% maybe they would have won.
