Inexcusable Loss...

When an unathletic team from Utah can press us and force us into so many turnovers there’s a problem.
When Trendon Watford, a freshman forward, is allowed to bring the ball up court with such freedom, there’s a problem. You cannot play this game without a point guard and we don’t have one at least one that wants the ball and wants the challenge of bringing it up the court.
When their sharpshooting conference player of the year is allowed to roam free on the court and find open threes there’s a problem.
When Skylar Mays is the only option to shoot from the 10 minute mark on in the second half to the end of the game because everyone else either misses or turns it over there’s a problem.
When you give up 50 points in a half there’s a problem. When you give up 50 points and all but about 10 of them are easy dunks, layups and wide open threes there’s a problem.
I’m sure I’ll get the excuse of it’s early and they haven’t had a chance to develop chemistry but keep in mind they played 6 games in Europe and two scrimmages and now 5 games. Plus, four of their 6-man rotation are returnees. You throw in the fact they held a 21-point lead in the second half and it’s Inexcusable. Don’t care who it’s against.

So you're saying LSU has a problem? Welcome to the party Captain Obvious.

Really? The number 15 team in the country is an inexcusable lose?

No what sucks is having a nineteen point lead and losing no excuses

Losing a 21 point lead to any team is an inexcusable loss.

It is when you have them down 21 in the second half. Yes. Inexcusable. Deflating. And the way it happened wasn’t all that surprising considering we’re on game 5 and can’t figure out how to bring the ball up court on a press without turning it over in bunches. Let me repeat that. Bunches as in bushels.

We did beat them in football so all is not lost.
But...there was no excuse for that 2nd half collapse. Is Johnny Jones now coaching this team?

I watched only the first half. When they were ahead by 17 points they were taking wild, low percentage 3 point shots. I said to myself this is not a sign of a well coached team.

We blew a big late lead to Florida State right near this time last year and all was not lost. Chemistry and learning to finish a win is steal thing and will wade and this team proved that last year.

I root for the players but we ain’t winning nothing this year.

Zero chance of keeping Will Wade around with this type thinking from the fanbase.
Congrats moron.

Yes, in the first half we hit a lot of 3's but I thought for the most part they were good looks. In fact I texted a friend at half we took 4 bad shots and Smart took 3 of them in the first half.
In the second half we went back to one on one stuff, quit getting Days the ball and moving the ball. Smart had a horrendous stretch where he either turned the ball over or took a terrible 3.
WW should have sat him and put Bishop in...he did once but too briefly. Smart needs to start feeling some consequences for bad decisions or they will continue.

Winner was ranked 15.
Why?
I agree with your issue about three point shooter "roaming free".
You do not need to be super athletic to play a pressing defense.

Probably the same guy bitching last season early on! Why don’t you give this team time to develop! douche!

Everyone focuses on the offense, and while their failure to execute at the end of the game was dissapponting, LSU has never had trouble scoring under Wade. VCU and USU are two good defensive teams and LSU averaged 80 points and 50% shooting against those two. It was their inability to play more than one half of sound defense that did them in. In BOTH games they allowed 50 point halves. That's inexcusable for a team this athletic. Yet, that was nothing uncommon. They currently sit 12th in the SEC in defensive efficiency and have never finished higher than 8th under Wade.
It's THE reason they played so many close games last year and why they haven't been able to close out the games against VIC and USU. They just struggle to string together stops. No one thinks Wade should be fired AT ALL. But clearly his defensive approach isn't great and it's forcing a really good offensive team to be damn near perfect (relatively speaking of course) to close out games

I think having Tremont for 2 years stunted the growth/development of both Mays/Smart AND Wade at the end of games. It was easy to just get him the ball and let him try to do something magical. He came through most of the times, but even when he didn’t, it was always on him, and we all took that for granted—fans, players, and coaches.
I think Wade was hoping Skylar was that guy and gave him that freedom against VCU. Didn’t work because that’s not who Skylar is (he’s just not quick enough to consistently create his own open looks with the game on the line). I don’t think we have that guy on this team, so the players—and Wade—will have to figure out there’s no savior to bail them out, and they’ll have to design and/or work the ball around to get the best look from their top 2-3 scorers.
It will be a learning process, but they’ll figure it out. Hopefully not too late to get left out of the tourney, but I wouldn’t put my money on us making it right now. Our lack of height and depth is gonna be an issue once SEC play comes around. That’s one of the reasons last night hurt so bad—it was a winnable game against a really good team that would have really been a nice notch on the ol’ resume.
Oh well. Can’t undo last night. Can’t undo VCU. Can’t remake the roster (though getting Taylor back will be big). But one thing they can—and must—do is quit turning the fricking ball over so much, especially Mays and Smart. That shite is unacceptable for anybody, especially guards. But this team is really athletic and exciting. Should make for a really fun season with ups and downs. We’ll upset some really good teams and lay some turds and probably lose to some we shouldn’t. All we can do is enjoy the ride.
