For the right person, shotguns are fine. Rifles hold more ammo, are easier to reload, easier to shoot accurate, extremely lethal, and penetrate walls less than shotguns. Plus you will want to practice with a rifles, shotguns will beat up your shoulder shooting all day. Pistols are hard to shoot accurate compared to rifles and have less capacity. Pistols are also less lethal than rifles.

How bad of a shot is everyone that they need a 30 round clip? Who are you defending yourself against? The Zombie apocalypse?

Get a shotgun. 20 gauge if you are worried about the kick.

What's the data on .300 blackout and wall penetration? Years ago I saw the tests that showed .223 breaks apart and doesn't penetrate very much, but I seem to remember that it was due to the combination of a very small bullet and very high velocity.
Subsonic .300 being less of both of those things begets my question.
