Does Italy have an Uber system? Is Travel agent is trying to get us booked with all of these "taxi" services. Just wondering if we could use Uber instead?

Travel agents still exist? And people still use them?

Just go there and figure the rest out later.

No Uber. There’s an app you can get to book taxis in the cities that works well.

This is the answer. I think TaxiMe or Bolt is the app you want. I wouldn’t commit yourself to taxi services- heck, I wouldn’t use a travel agent. For day trips, you can go with viator for rural locations and the trains are VERY easy to use. I’ll try to answer any questions you have.

There is Uber, it’s just not regular Uber, all of them are Uber Limos (Mercedes, Audis etc) driven by licensed limo drivers, so it costs more

Use the “my taxi” app. It is just like Uber, but for taxis. You type in your destination, and can pay with cash-or through the app. It works in most all major European cities.
I’d do car service to and from the airport and then use a combination of my taxi and your legs the rest of the time.

I used Uber exclusively in Rome last summer. Other cities we hired private drivers or walked

Pretty sure that’s what we used in Florence and it worked perfectly. Haven’t been to Rome in forever so not sure the best for that.

Are you averse to using public transit? Trains, trams, and buses go plenty of places. In 15+ years of visiting Italy on a regular basis, I’ve used a car service exactly ONE time: when I had to get to FCO for an early AM flight before the trams began service for the day.
As for buying train tickets, you can buy them out of a machine at almost all stations, with on screen instructions in English. Google Italian train ticket machine instructions, and you’ll find step by step videos, if you want to see how the process works.

If you are staying in the city centers, which in the larger cities are where just about anything you want to see is, they are pretty walkable, even in our mid 50’s. Just wear comfy shoes (watch out for the cobblestone streets in Rome). It was a great way to really see the city and we found some “hidden gem” shops and restaurants (also lost a few pounds even eating pasta, pizza, and gelato!).
Also, if you are going to Rome or Florence you get free bus rides when you buy the City Pass packages that help you save money and time in line buying tickets.
