The general rule is always to buy a watch that comes on a bracelet with the bracelet. You can always but cheaper but still high quality straps on most watches (there are a handful of exceptions the JLC Reversos are a glaring one) and if you are willing to wear an unsigned buckle/deployant you can save a mint. I have a dozen or so straps for my Panerais handmade to my specs by a guy in Vietnam out of all sorts of leathers (shark, stingray, ostrich leg, caiman and etc) that are very well made and dirt cheap.

I think I started the last watch thread and ended up with a Rolex Milguass with black face and orange lightning bolt second hand.

Oddly enough the correct name for the Milgauss second hand is Thunderbolt. They weren't on the original 1019 Milgauss but started with the 6541. Some of the first 6541s were delivered with the straight 1019 second hand.

The 6541 is one of my 2 Rolex grails:

#2 is a tropical dial (faded from black to brown) 6541 Milgauss. The honeycomb dial and Thunderbolt handset make it so cool, also it is very rare. Probably pushing $250k at auction for a specimen like below.

#1 is a Zerographe. They are beyond rare. I would have a hard time choosing between the black dial with "California" numerals or a white dial, especially one with the radiation burns on the dial like the one below, if only it had stopped at 10 past 10. Figure $400k-500k at auction for either depending on who is bidding.

It's amazing what people collect.

As long as there's a market, it's cool.

If i was looking at that iwc I would buy this for 150$ and spend the rest on hookers and blow.

JLC Reverso

The Reverso in its many iterations is a watch I like very much. Despite being originally designed as a sports watch in the '30s it always strikes me as a perfect gentlemen's dress watch. The reversing face can reveal a display back, another face of a different color, and enameled caseback or a solid one that can be engraved simply or elaborately.

One thing about the Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso besides being able to properly pronounce the name of something you wear is despite its rather small face size the rectangular nature can give people with small to average size wrists fits and definitely is a watch that needs to be tried on. The long lug to lug can easily to too long for many being too close to or hanging over the edge of the wrist. I have a 7" wrist but it is very wide and flat and most Reversos just fit. To complicate it more the strap had a piece, in the end, to make sure it flows away from the lugs so it can't turn down immediately which means aftermarket straps look odd on them as well as making for a poor fit on some smaller wrists. Outside of that they are great but one should also consider the Cartier Tank Francaise.

The vintage Rolex market has been "in a bubble" for at least 10 years but it just keeps rolling. Most of my modern collection was built on profits from vintage Rolex watches which I sold for 10-50 times what I paid for them 20-25 years ago. I still have a Daytona in the collection that is so rare the price is hard to guess since there have been so few come up for auction. One with the same reference number but the most common dial color might be worth $65-80k in the same condition but the last one that auctioned (about 5 years ago) went for 400,000 CHF which is trading almost 1 to 1 with the USD now, was worth more than the USD at the time. I paid $3800 for it in 1993.

I was really surprised that my friend had to pay >$9k over retail for an ‘unworn’ YG Daytona. He tried through ADs and they were talking 18 months with no alotted production date. He wanted the green dial and they simply couldn’t promise they’d ever make them just like that again. They certainly are a modern De Beers with their aura of exclusivity.

I tried to talk him into the WG with a steel dial:

But it just didn’t have the look he was going for:

Would you mind sharing the contact information for your strap guy?

Thanks.

I have some...great watch, In my opinion I would find a carefully curated 16570 - the older version (pre 2011), smaller 40 mm case (as opposed to 42 mm on current 216570), slimmer lugs, slimmer hands, smaller markers and red 24 hour hand. It is a great rugged watch, and if you like bigger watches, and the Rolex super case with the maxi dial, then the newer version is great. Also, the demand is not crazy, so chances you can find one pretty easy from a dealer.

depends on the region. I'm in NYC area, and I've been on a list with 4 ADs in area for 3+ months, and I'm still waiting (black or white face). Any SS Rolex here is a long wait right now.

I wish there was an easier way to get these. I went to the store a few months back thinking I was going to leave with one

What is your budget? 5k, 10k, 15k?

Rolex submariner is a great classic choice, as is the datejust. Split the difference with the Yachtmaster. I have it with blue dial, but be warned-- the platinum bezel is a scratch magnet.

Omega- > don't own Aqua Terra, but its a gorgeous watch. I do have a seamaster planet ocean with the 8500 coaxial movement and its a great watch (but a different style than the A-T, more of a beefy dress diver... tone it down by going 42mm instead of the 45.5)

IWC-- don't own an IWC, but if you go that route, the Portuguese is an absolute icon. I recommend the blue numerals though, thank me later

Good luck with your choice. Check out the watchuseek forums for other great recs

It looks like he has disappeared. He was vnhandcrafted on eBay and had a small website, the website is gone and eBay shows him as no longer a registered user. Shame he had great stuff and would do anything you ask him to do.

It’s a beautiful watch, I’ve always had trouble pulling the trigger though.

It’s so ubiquitous, which is part of it for me, but it also feels like the watch you buy when you’re trying to make up for something. This is unfair, but I imagine the accountant living a quiet life in suburbia, who wants to look tough.

Perhaps that says more about me than anything else though.

I’ve always admired the men who go small, and go with something like a tank watch. It sends the opposite message in my mind.

You could always mix it up and get a hulk sub or gmt master. I got an air king a few years back and love it. Also have an Omega seamaster coaxial which is solid too.

I love the Air King. Such a good choice.

I really like the GMT. Especially older ones that have started to fade.

If I was picking one Rolex though, I’d go for the 1016 Explorer.

I bought that exact Rolex (Datejust 41) a couple of weeks ago. It is beautiful.
