Because there are white-looking hispanic people. They identify themselves as white hispanics because they look different from the brown or black ones.

I’m a white hispanic. My dad was brown. My brother is brown. I went to law school with a girl whose family immigrated to Argentina from Vietnam when she was a baby. She was Hispanic to me

IN the parish I teach in if you are not black, then you are white. With the 64 year old desegregation case if you are a minority you can go to any school that you would be a minority. For example a black student from Kentwood (all black school) can go to a school like Loranger who is mostly white. The problem is the only minority identified in the parish is black. The Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students dont get the same privilege because they are considered white. The owner of Pan's Chinese restaurant in Kentwood did not want his kids to go to Kentwood high for obvious reasons. He had to buy land in the Sumner district just so he could "say" he lived there. Under the rules, they are a minority and should have had choice but as stated above, they are considered "white" because they are not black.

Most hispanics are white. So that is a way to differentiate the two.
