German engineering is vastly overrated.

Generally means a pain in the arse to work on.

My 99.5 MKIV went to 200k miles with very little issues. 2.slow motor with the O1M transmission. Had the typical 1st year issues covered under warranty. Yes, I did have the CEL’s. Chalked it up to crappy MAF and O2 sensor design. Car was very solid.

I Bought a 2015 Passat new. I have had not one single problem in the 4 years I have owned it. I mean absolutely zero. Have been very pleased with it.

However, I did own a 2000 Passat with the 1.8 turbo and I loved how it drove, but it did have a few problems over the years that used to really irritate me. Seems like they have done a good job of correcting those old problems.

On the bright side, the only thing left to fix would be quality of life upgrades. A/C , electric windows.. Etc.

He can do that shite himself though.

VW are known to have terrible electrical gremlins.

You got that right. I've known people with VWs and Audis that had to get rid of their cars because the mechanics could not figure out the electrical problems.

All I can tell you is, my mechanic hates them... He told me If I ever buy one and it has problems, bring it somewhere else...

If it happens again just put a piece of duct tape over the check engine light.

They don’t call it “god on a roll” for nothing.

They are prone to getting air in the coolant system. That's the issue I had with a Jetta. Very hard to burn the air out.

Owned an '03 Passat with the 1.8T for about a year and a half and it was the worst car I ever owned. Only had around 130K miles on it but just one thing after another started going wrong with that car and everything was a PIA and expensive to fix.
