The chain now has more outlets across the country than McDonald’s has restaurants, and its profits have surged past some of the grand old names of American retail. The company estimates that three-quarters of the population lives within five miles of one of its stores, which stock everything from groceries and household cleaners to clothes and tools. Not everything is to be had for a dollar, but rarely is anything priced above $10. But there is a cost.

Dollar Generals are frequently found at the heart of “food deserts”, defined by the department of agriculture as a rural community where one-third of residents live more than 10 miles from a grocery store selling fresh produce.

Dollar General’s aggressive pricing drives locally owned grocery stores out of business, replacing shelves stocked with fresh fruit, vegetables and meat with the kinds of processed foods underpinning the country’s obesity and diabetes crisis.

I recently drove through a fairly rural section of Arkansas. Every town with a population over 100 had a Dollar General. Apparently you need a couple thousand to support a Walmart though.

They have a brilliant strategy and found the market. Poor people and ultra isolated.

They carry the brands we know and love. Nothing wrong with DG when you're in a hurry.

They are putting them where there is nothing for 30 miles. It is literally bringing people out of the woodwork.

I’ve owned Dollar General stock since 2015. It’s a very well run company.

It’s not the store or the brands. I just don’t want to associate myself with the other customers.

I can agree with that. Here in Montgomery it’s line going Into a trap house. There’s literally crack whores and such just hanging around them.

There's a Dollar General on the way to our lake house in the middle of freaking no where.

Avoided it for the longest time, then decided to swing in one day. It's freaking great.
