We didn't sniff the top 5 for nearly 40 years after Dietzel left until he came along. He made us relevant in College Football when no one else could. Not even Cholly Mac could.

Every LSU football coach not named Hallman after Dietzel saw an AP rank of 6 or better at some point. Yes, Saban defibrillated the program. But you’re also making shite up.

AP rankings. Sniff it.

Ok, I'll give you that.. we peaked at 4 two years, and 5 three years. Great...but we were never in the MNC discussion. Since Saban got us there in 03... there is a black & white difference in our highest ranking after '03, compared to before, and have played for a NC 3 times. There's been a significant change in our National perception since then and he put us there,... on a level that we clearly were not at before, plain & simple. And Dinardo peaked at #6, only to have us finish unranked at years end. McClendon, Stovall, Archer,(even Arnsbarger who was probably the best of the bunch) couldn't take us to the top. Saban alone did it. This I am not making up.

The fact that he is saying this now speaks volumes. The gumps won’t like it but he’s obviously telling the truth. He’s got nothing to gain by saying it, and if you take him at his word, it all makes sense. The Sabans really did want to come back to LSU, but that was not an option at the time. Even after all of the success that they’ve had there, Saban is saying he would have been happier if he hadn’t left LSU. He didn’t say things turned out great in the end. He still regrets it. Pretty shocking.

And as competitive as he is, he regrets leaving LSU even more than he regrets passing on one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time on the way to completely failing as a pro coach. That’s some powerful regret right there. That little SOB is making it hard for me to continue hating him.

I don't think there are many half intelligent, or better, people that didn't know this already. What he did at LSU was really amazing considering all the coaches who tried and failed. And had he stayed there's no telling how many more NC's he would have.

This thread is legendary lmao.

Oh frick you man. Don't you do that to me, you tiny, shite headed, beautiful bastard savant. frick off.

I laughed so hard at this.

I will never forget 97-03. CFB... well the entire world really... was a different place. Ppl had less constant access to entertainment, CFB was a lot less regional, and tailgating at LSU was a lot crazier (despite the losing program) — then this dude turned everything around in like a year + BR was in an absolute frenzy.

They were dogs in every big game all the way through the ‘03 title matchup. I remember EVERYONE outside of Ohio rooting for the Tigers in ‘03 NCG.

That situation would be hard to replicate present-day. Maybe UTx turning it around with Herman or someone rescuing Michigan or Notre Dame would be comparable, but even those programs haven’t been bad for as long as LSU was in the 70s, 80s, 90s. It really was not too much unlike the saints’ Super Bowl for me.

Don’t get me wrong... the Bama run is more than impressive, but I am not sure I’d even trade 5 titles for my memory of 2000-03 — I know that sounds insane, but nothing tastes as sweet as the first time lol.

I’m really not surprised he looks back on his time in Baton Rouge particularly fondly.

I will say that things feel exciting this year & it would feel sweet as hell to beat him in style after suffering through 7 yrs of that sputtering change-resistant offense.

How?

Perhaps you’ve missed his recruiting in Louisiana, even taking kids that aren’t as good as what they could get just to keep them from LSU. The negative recruiting of a Devin White, “you can go to LSU, but we’ll beat you every year,” Or that the game they are most prepared for, open week before is LSU.

It’s not difficult to see why Saban would be a common topic on here.

“As it turns out, what I learned from that experience in hindsight was, it was a huge mistake to leave college football,” Saban told the USA Today Network in a recently revisited interview. “And I know a lot of LSU fans think I left for whatever reasons, but I left because I wanted to be a pro coach, or thought I wanted to be a pro coach. We loved LSU. We worked hard to build the program. If there was one thing professionally that I would do over again, it would’ve been not to leave LSU.”

Skip has told this story on the radio. Saban did not want to go to the NFL, but because the Dolphins were giving him so much he had to go. He thought he would never get another offer that good.

the PROs did 2 GREAT things for Saban:
Padded his bank account
Taught him how to scheme better. Saban is a much better coach than the Saban at LSU.

So if we beat Bama this year and O runs and jumps into the arms of Burrow are you going to say O looks like a little girl ?

His job

Either you made that up or someone else did. That’s just stupid.

The negative recruiting of a Devin White, “you can go to LSU, but we’ll beat you every year,”

Again, his job.

Same as us.

This is just a bunch of whining.

This is absolutely correct.

Saban would call Jimbo each week before the games. I remember Jimbo telling this to a recruit in the locker room prior to a game in 2015.

Saban knew after the first practice he made a mistake. Fortunately for him, he got to go back to an untouchable program and voila....

First off, he didn't leave us for another college gig.
Secondly, Bama had an opening when he wanted to come back to college and they pursued him hard.
Lastly, everyone makes decisions based on their own agenda. Why do you consider this unique?

I’m talking about once he decided to leave Miami to return to college. Some LSU fans wish that if he couldn’t come back to LSU, he would at least stay out of our division. But he didn’t feel any sense of loyalty to LSU. He was all about himself. And like I said, some people (like you apparently) are fine with that. Others aren’t.

ETA I don’t think that part of the LSU fanbase would be unique in this situation. If Urban Meyer had gone to Georgia instead of Ohio St. after sitting out a couple years with health issues, I think that game in Jacksonville would have a little more juice, no?
