The fabricator meme reminds me of my old 82 yr old buddy down the street. He is quick to say he will weld something for me if necessary. His welds look just like that meme pic. Seriously!

I work for a plant (not an OT operator baller) but I usually have contract companies working for me and I pay their time. I know for a fact the welders that work for me make upwards of $35 an hour and $80-$100 a day per diem. Doesn’t take much OT to get them to $100,000 a year. Especially when some of these companies pay their welders double time after 8 hours a day and all day Saturday and Sunday. These stats probably lump the welders who don’t work in heavy industrial settings in with the industrial welders which brings the average down.

I’d be willing to bet this is based on structural stick welders and probably Union at that.

Combo welder,a good one, $40+/hr staying local (<60miles from home. A Good Combo welder with his own rig willing to travel (>60 miles) $55+/hr -+ per diem.

I totally believe the rest of the post, but the guys working for the good welding companies are all getting at least $100 per diem.

The supervisor types get $115 to $125.

Some plants pay more than others and it varies by contractor as well.

(A) class skill set and above normally qualify. Once the project starts to fall behind and quality workers are hard to come by, (B) class skill set will even get some love.

Probably because most welders are shop hands making 20 bucks an hour. That ain't where the money is

Coworkers husband works at the Alyeska Terminal and makes $190k a year.

The refineries in the region and especially the ones with the same company try to work out schedules where they aren't all competing for the same resources.

That little area in southeast TX is hot right now since Shell Deer Park has a massive TA happening.

If you get another event like a Katrina happen, the prima donna welders will be holding out and wanting to sign some stupid contracts or something.

On that job at Limetree you should get per the diem and a free spot in the man camp plus 3 meals a day. It a money earning job.

But I heard that they and 18 wheeler drivers make up to 200,000 K a year

One of my best friends owns and operates his own 18 wheeler and flat bed trailer. I know for a 100% fact he grossed right at 280k last year. After fuel/maintenance/insurance he got about 150k of that. He basically lives in his truck, constantly rolling

This is the first year (actually we have to file retro reports for 2017 and 2018) the Fed Government EEOC are using W-2 Box 1 wages divided by "hours worked' to determine average rates. Up until 2019 it was always just standard hourly rate and did not take into account OT nor number of hours worked.

Well considering up until May I was a Sr PM for a specialty industrial contractor and hired and paid hundreds of guys over a five year period, I know what they made. We did concrete and steel work

We hired non certified welders at 27/hour.
Labors-20/hour
Tech-22-28/hour
Certified welders- 33-36/hour
Foreman-36+
Super-42+

All for essentially a permanent 40-50 hour a week job. We would have 2-3 turnarounds a year for 2-3 weeks at a time. We paid 90 a day per diem for below foreman, 120 for above that.

The guys chasing TA work make over 100 usually.

I now work at a chemical plant in LC. Our maintenance welders make 30-35/hour plus full benefits. Only working max 2 turnarounds a year. These are permanent positions with the actual plant. They get 4% match on 401k plus 8% bonus into 401k at the end of the year. They don't make close to 100k a year but make 70-75 with great benifits and retirement. Not bad for a HS grad.

Most peoe recommending the trades are saying so to people that are going to college for some bullshite. They aren't telling people that would be majoring in engineering, any of the financial type majors or medicals majors. But welding does pay alot better than a teacher and things of the sort.

One of my buddies is a hiring manager for a VERY large contractor and he told me their ceiling for welders is $18 an hour. That he had a guy come in that had 25 years of experience and had retired from a paper mill but was just wanting some part time work. When he offered him $18 an hour the guy laughed at him and said thanks but no thanks.

You know what he’s getting for $18 an hour? Something that I’m not walking on.
