I see people mention it when it comes to cord cutting, but what exactly is it?

It is a piracy platform that isn't easy to explain. There are plenty of guides available on youtube.
The simple description would be a program that scours the internet for streaming links of copyrighted content. All in one nicely packaged program.

Kodi isn't a piracy platform, it can be used as one.
Kodi is basically open source home theater software. It can do a number of things including keeping you audio and video libraries accessible to other devices. Since it is open source, people have written plugins for it to search for online media torrents and files to be able to stream pirated movies.
It's basically a more open version of Plex, but Plex has some features which are much more preferred for a media center that isn't piracy related.

99% of the people using Kodi use it to watch copyrighted programming. I don't care about that but trying to claim it isn't mainly used to package together links to copyrighted info is a straight up lie.
And yes I pulled the 99% out of the air but I doubt it is far off from reality.

Kodi is almost 100% used for piracy. Youtube has billions of legit videos on it.
Every single instance of people mentioning Kodi on this site is to watch copyrighted videos or sports events.
You clowns claiming it isn't a piracy platform have used it to watch copyrighted material.
I've used it. Yes, it can be used for legit purposes. Most people don't use it for legit purposes and the OP using it to replace cable isn't using it to watch public domain content.

You can watch nearly anything you want with Kodi BUT
- Most streams are of questionable legality
- Availability and quality of streams is very inconsistent
- Even if you find a high quality stream there is often a quirk like subtitles in another language
- Setup requires a moderate level of tech savvy and effort. It's not as simple as installing an app from the app store, you have to figure out which "flavor" of Kodi you want to run and upgrades often require manual installation
You get what you pay for. Kodi has enough holes and deal breakers that's it's not the solution for everyone. If you expect a high quality stream every time you click on something to watch then you need to go with a pay service.

Using a VPN is always a good idea, that and changing your DNS Server to a more secure public server such as google's DNS Server LINK. But watching stuff on Youtube is not illegal. Youtube has the duty to delete stuff that's not legal.

I'm also one of those weirdos that used Kodi as a media center only.
My goal was HTPC that was remote controlled, no keyboard, no mouse that had access to my cable subscription (I actually used WMC with a launcher that would start Kodi) to have access to Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu.
Sadly, the significantly more robust OS of Windows can't do what TVOS, RokuOS and FireTV can in terms of accessing these things without needing a mouse or keyboard. And then when they had apps that worked, they typically were not the highest quality (4k and surround sound rarely working because they were browser versions which lagged behind, likely for fear of piracy) so I finally gave up about a year ago.

It still doesn't change what Kodi is though and what you said being wrong. It's an open source media platform. People made plugins for Kodi that made it easy for simpletons to stream pirated content. Kodi is not just those plugins, it's just the main use of the software because they made that aspect easy.
Honestly I wish it was a ton harder, the easier and more mainstream it got, the worse it became to use it for that aspect.
Plex isn't a piracy platform either, even though everything on my plex server is entirely pirated.

Correct. You can't stream shite with a fresh install of Kodi. You have to install add-ons. Don't confuse some of these Kodi builds that come with a bunch of add-ons already installed as being vanilla Kodi itself. Those are builds someone put together.

Those streaming plugins are what gave it notoriety, but even those can be completely legit and some are completely... Not.
The illegitimate stuff isn't available in the default repository of plugins so requires more work and Google fu to set up. Some people have created builds of kodi that have a bunch of that stuff pre-installed. I've tried one or two before, never liked it. I've got a pretty decent local media repository so I almost entirety play local (at least to my network) media.

Was just gonna post that. Cinema takes up way less space than Kodi plus gives the option to download. Cinema is the same concept as Kodi but accomplishes your goal with a lot fewer choices that you honestly don’t need.
