St. George proponents hold rally; pull out of planned televised forum with opponents

The Advocate
Had to dig through their website a bit to find this one. Not all that surprising.
Lol
And to toss this in at the end so hopefully no one really notices it, but it's what I've been saying all along.

At Thursday night's rally, the St. George organizers instead made impassioned pleas to the crowd to vote, and vote early, in the upcoming election. They also chided the city-parish and Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome on perceived shortcomings they feel warrants the need for their incorporation. “Early voting is how we win,” Drew Murrell told the crowd. The rally happened a day after opponents of the proposed city, which would be the fifth in the parish, hosted what they called a “community civic academy” aimed at educating voters about the potential impact St. George’s incorporation would have on the rest of the parish.
quote:
Some St. George proponents, like Murrell, attended the opposition’s Wednesday night event and, in turn, members from the opposition were also scattered among the crowd at Thursday’s night rally. Murrell made a point to inform the crowd that Broome and most of her administration had attended the opposition’s event the previous day but did not bother to show up for Thursday's rally. However, there were no shortage of elected officials in attendance. But most of them have been vocal in their support of St. George already, like Metro Councilman Dwight Hudson and state Reps. Bodie White, R-Central, and Rick Edmonds, R-Baton Rouge, who spearheaded much of the legislation that has supported the incorporation on the state level.
quote:
Chris Rials, vice-chairman of that petition drive, listed five reasons why organizers have spent the past few years trying to create the city. Among them where frustrations over Baton Rouge’s high crime rates, claims of over-taxation by the city-parish, chronic drainage issues that have resulted in increased flash flooding during heavy rains, the city-parish’s inability to retain middle income families who are fleeing to surrounding parishes, primarily for better schools.
quote:
Rials and Murrell were supposed to debate the merits of the incorporation next week on WBRZ-TV with opponents as part of a forum with the Baton Rouge Civic Association. But in an interview before Thursday’s rally, Murrell said they backed out because Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome refused to appear as well. The opposition fired back by saying St. George organizers are trying to avoid any real discussions about the higher taxes, budget deficits and student displacement that would occur if a new city is formed in southeast East Baton Rouge Parish.
quote:
"Why would I debate M.E. Cormier? She doesn't live in St. George and she doesn't work for the city-parish," Murrell said. "We are questioning how (Broome) chooses to run city-parish government. We're telling you how we're going to do things differently."
Lol
And to toss this in at the end so hopefully no one really notices it, but it's what I've been saying all along.

And although the anti-incorporation group bears the name "Residents Against the Breakaway," no one would break away from anything. The effort would create St. George in a currently unincorporated area, and St. George would still be within East Baton Rouge Parish but as an independent city.

They are talking about breaking away from the St. George wallet. Their ability to siphon money away from St. George residents to pay other people's bills is being cut off.
If your money is not available to them, how are they supposed to steal it?

Saw the news coverage of the rally. Seemed real "bright" in that room.

As with a thread on this yesterday, your title doesn't tell the full story.

If someone who is not a resident in the proposed area nor an official with the city/parish government is all pissy because they aren't allowed to debate against the St. George movement, they can just go frick themselves.

What’s the likelihood the St. George folks win? Is it expected to be a long shot, 50/50?

I'm thinking it will pass in the upper 60s to low 70s percentage wise.

Me too. She lives right down the street from me. I don't know her though.

I'd say it's likely to pass. It'll probably be challenged in court.

They will fight to the end though.

What challenge could they win, though?
We already discussed the EBR Parish charter, which limits the number of cities in the parish to four, and that is expressly overruled by the state constitution which says that the parish charter can’t prevent incorporation.

Interesting. The venue and specifics of the"debate" are changed last minute and one side says "You changed the situation and it is not what we agreed upon," and media reports it as one side pulling out, no mention of the tactics by the other side being less than honest.. Additionally they brush over the fact that the mayor or anyone from her administration would be present. EBR has made the claim that STG is breaking off (false) and they say it is best to stay together, but they will not be present to debate the issues. ME Cormier does not represent anything that can speak to the administration for the side opposing STG, she can only complain that her Magnate program will be in jeopardy and spout talking points that have been proven false.

A more important topic that the media will not cover is the mailer I received yesterday. It states that STG officials never spoke to the Sheriff about how much it will cost for police protection. This is interesting because they are 1. making an assumption (I think) that the sheriff charges for police protection (illegal/fraud) when it is paid by taxes which the people of the parish (of which the STG area is included) already pay for. 2. Apparently this must have taken place for Baker, Zachary and Central - Illegal - if I was the current or past Sheriff I would be concerned about this accusation (or we are simply going to ignore this - the media sure will). 3.Does BR City pay the sheriff for police protection too, and if so why do they have a city police, it would seem redundant and a waste of tax dollars if BR citizens pay for both the city and parish police.

The sheriff card is about the only one they have to play.
They can’t say St George needs its own water system because BR Water is a private entity already serving the area.
They can’t say they need fire coverage because the St George Fire District exists to cover these areas.
They can’t claim that St George has to have its own public works group because that is a parish function as of now.
Etc.
All of the things that made it easy for BR to fund itself at the expense of St George also make it easy for St George to incorporate with minimal issues.

I told my wife we got a "fear letter." She hasn't kept up with it enough so I had to explain all the misinformation the brochure had.

She lives right on the proposed border but just inside the city limits. I wonder if she has some personal concerns about her own property value, taxes etc? If she has kids in the magnet program they wouldn't be affected.
