Posted this shite on the wrong OT. But this is insane to me. How Pepsi became a military power

quote:

In 1959, then-President Dwight Eisenhower wanted to bring our America culture to citizens of the Soviet Union and show them the benefits of capitalism.
To showcase their ideologies, the American government arranged the "American National Exhibition" in Moscow and sent then-Vice President Richard Nixon to attend the opening - but things were about to take a turn for the worse.
Nixon and Soviet leader Khrushchev got into an argument over the topic of capitalism versus communism. Their conversation got so heated that the vice president of Pepsi intervened and offered the Soviet leader a cup of his delicious, sugary beverage - and he drank it.

quote:

Years later, the people of the Soviet Union wanted to strike a deal that would bring Pepsi products to their country permanently. However, there was an issue of how they would pay for their newest beverage, as their money wasn't accepted throughout the world.
So, the clever country decided to buy Pepsi using a universal currency: vodka!
In the late 1980s, Russia's initial agreement to serve Pepsi in their country was about to expire, but this time, their vodka wasn't going to be enough to cover the cost.
So, the Russians did what any country would do in desperate times: They traded Pepsi a fleet of subs and boats for a whole lot of soda. The new agreement included 17 submarines, a cruiser, a frigate, and a destroyer.

quote:

The combined fleet was traded for three billion dollars worth of Pepsi. Yes, you read that right. Russia loves their Pepsi.
The historical exchange caused Pepsi to become the 6th most powerful military in the world, for a moment, before they sold the fleet to a Swedish company for scrap recycling.

What the hell Russia That's enough firepower to drop some small countries

I was shocked to read that at first, but then I realized that's probably the best course of action for a Soviet-built fleet of boats.

And despite this, they still play second fiddle to Coca Cola.

All they had to do was declare war on Coke.

To pull from a Sam Kinison routine from that time, the fourth largest military in the world was the Hare Krishnas and they already controlled all of our airports.

Want to say if you are purely looking at soda sales and numbers coke is on top.

But with the snack foods Pepsi controls (which i was surprised is a shite ton) Pepsi would be on top.

don't keep up with that much but didn't Pepsi used to own Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and some other pretty successful fast food chains?

Yes. Which is why they only served their shitty drinks there.

PEPSICO is a corporate behemoth but that doesn’t take away from the fact that their cola sucks balls.

I wouldn’t just limit it to snack foods like Frito-Lay.

Pepsi does, or did, have large investments in fast food chains. And a number of those chains ended up having large contracts signed to only serve Pepsi products before being sold off.

Its really mindblowing. This really wasn't that long ago.

At the time, that was a stronger Navy fleet than the likes of Italy and France.

Pepsi and McDonalds opened them up to the west. They used to have hours long waits at McDonald's in the USSR.

I look at it as a giant brick joke going back to the James Cagney film One Two Three about a Coca Cola executive attempting to secure Coke’s place behind the Iron Curtain in pre-Wall Berlin.

Tied to that, co-star Joan Crawford was a major Pepsi investor and didn’t like all the product placement in the film, so the final gag of the film became Cagney using a Coke machine to buy a bottle only for it to end up being a Pepsi.

Meh, the subs and ships were already going to be scrapped by the soviets. They were decommissioned so I'm not sure how that makes Pepsi the 6th biggest....he said biggest not most powerful....military power.
