Toro self propelled mower with a Briggs engine. 10 years old and I’ve changed the head gasket 3 times. Changed it last summer and now I think it’s blown again. Couple drops of oil on the base and smokes for a few minutes when I start it. Changing the gasket has fixed the issue last 3 times but why is it going out so frequently?

I don’t have any issues with the mower other than that. It’s less than $10 to fix and very easy to change, just an annoyance really.

Just spit balling here but it could be a number of things.

Bad head bolts
Improper head bolt torque
Bad/wrong head gasket type or material
Engine running rich thus hot and causing excessive expansion
Engine fins clogged and thus running hot
Improperly gapped spark plug

Don't forget he could have a bad casting, and the heads/block might need to be decked or were cracked from the factory

Any chance you could get a copper head gasket and be done with it?

Chinese Briggs are shitty engines. Had a brand new one on a reel mower break a connecting rod. Out the box put gas and oil and ran for maybe 30 minutes. Never felt right then kaput. Wasn’t even worth warranty claim. That’s as shitty as engine.

Are either warped? Also I had a Kohler do the same thing until I read the service manual and it said to use new bolts when replacing head and / or gasket. One other thing are your torquing them in the correct order and to the correct spec?
