You really think a personal reference the applicant puts on a resume is going to say something bad about them? There's a reason why they out them on there. And professional references have moved almost exclusively to just confirming employment.

I guess it depends on what organization you work for

I call professional references all the time and ask specific questions about the candidate. Several times I've asked candidates to provide additional references if the ones they originally submitted aren't relevant to their professional background/skills.

You would be surprised. Ive had multiple people give me personal references that told me the applicant was nice but lazy and that I shouldn't hire them.
