re: Military Buffs: Navy SEALs Are Comparable to Which Army Unit?

Why do we have a Coast Guard when we have a Navy? Same thing can be said here. We got a bunch of government people that do nothing but fight over funding and in order to get more funding they try to argue they need to be the ones to complete a certain mission over someone else.
The army tried to argue that ballistic missiles were a sort of artillary. There’s 0 reasonable reasons the army should have anything that flies, helicopters should be Air Force.
The government wastes a shite ton of money. I don’t know why we even have Marines. The army and marines have different missions but you are telling me the same guys can’t defend their homeland and advance on an enemy?
Just thought I’d pour gas on the fire. We have the strongest military and that’s gonna mean a lot of wasted money and a lot of hardasses having pissing contests.

one of the SEAL's big problems
Is that they write books and make movies.

One is law enforcement/first responders and one is military. They're different.

Don’t know a whole lot of real delta guys that talk about it
I was CI in the Army. Had a TS/SCI and actually came across some Delta soldiers, and they never said shite.

I normally just read the content of the board but created an account just to specifically comment on this thread. There is a lot of good information along with a lot of "head scratching" information in this thread. I have a little inside information on some of the topics but I definitely was not an operator during my military service.
Regarding the Marine Raider Regiment (MARSOC), they were specifically created after 9/11, and the initial experiences in Afghanistan. Donald Rumsfeld saw the need to expand JSOC due to his thinking of how future wars would be fought. He ordered the Marine Corps to form MCSOCOM Detachment One to initially integrate a Marine Corps special operation unit into JSOC although the Marine leadership at the time resisted detaching a unit to JSOC. Those initial Marines were pulled solely from recon units. Today's Raiders are a Tier 2 unit and yes have had over 300 missions.
Regarding why DEVGRU (SEAL Team 6) was chosen over Delta for the Bin Laden mission. This was solely based on DEVGRU being the asset in theater at the time and available. Delta had rotated most of its teams to CONUS when the mission came up. At the time there was always a Tier One asset in theater at all times. Delta and DEVGRU are the only Tier One assets in the U.S. Military and they rotated in and out of theater.

Delta Force.
SF, as you said has a different primary role than SEALS.
Rangers are equivalent to the Marines.
Airborne is multiple divisions, they aren't comparable to SEALS in any way other than they can both jump from planes.

writing skills pale in comparison to the SEALs

They didn’t call in the Berets or Rangers to get Bin Laden. That speaks volumes
Because that's not either groups primary mission. Why would they call them? Delta Force is the Army equivalent of the ST6 but SEALS get all the publicity.

People keep saying this but its simply not all the way true.
Seals particularly practice for water based things, much more so then Delta would. Now I'm not sure what exactly Delta does more of then Seals, but Seals absolutely do more water based training.
This whole idea that both branches have the exact same is not true at all. They both can certainly do many of the same missions, but they also specialize.
Same thing with most of the military. We spend a ton of money for particular units to specialize. That doesn't mean that's all they do and that all of their missions can only be accomplished by them. Many times over the commanders particular want multiple options.

Marine Recon has a completely different mission. They do not have any of the underwater demolition and infiltration skills. So no, they aren’t “just as capable” because they have completely different capabilities
Just trust me, bro...

We had two former Delta guys as heads of security on our compound in SE Asia. Nice guys, but caged lions.
When having a few beers we used to joke with them about how they would beat us in a bar fight.
They nearly always responded with... "You've already lost."

Who knew the OT had so many experts on something the government spends so much effort to keep secret? It is amazing really.

Since where in the monthly military thread. Does anyone know if MARSOC actually does anything? I never hear anything about those dudes and I've never really seen them in my travels. Do they get missions?
I know some guys I used to serve with that went into that unit. They’re still trying to find their true identity. They stood that unit up from a different/very similar unit back in like 06 and they’re still trying to figure out who they are. Really weird selection criteria. Know a 300 pft’er who was an officer that completed the entire course and was a non-select. Most of the guys I knew that moved over to SOC got out. They’re just not really trusted with the sexy missions yet.

I was airborne infantry. Not very elite.

Why'd you cover up part of the unit name but left 3rd Recon's logo?

Lol guess I didn’t expect anyone to know the logo. I remember you from here. Aren’t you in right now?

Because Special Forces and the 75th aren't part of JSOC.
