GameStop Laying off a slew of Managers

They also changed their districts and laid off HR people, etc. More than 50 people let go.

I think this is just the beginning, I expect we hear of multiple store closings in the next 6 months or so (possibly right after Christmas maybe?)
We are only a few years away from the statement, "Remember when Gamestop was a thing?"
PS ETA: If you are going to click on a link, click on Spawn Wave, I'm sure you guys know about him, but he's super easy to digest information from. (also used to work for Gamestop)

Gamestop serves a purpose in smaller towns where a best buy or whatever isn't readily accessible if you ask me. But outside of that forget it.

Just a matter of time. Obsolete business model. There is nothing they can do.

I mean, I know GameStop is the new thing to hate on, but GameStop is such a big part of my life as I grew up. EB Games, Babages, etc. they were all great.
The model these stores used has slowly died, yes, Youtube has shown us that the working conditions at these stores have not always been the best... but they were a part of our lives for so long. It's very unfortunate that this model is circling the toilet - but at the same time, I know GameStop was one of the worst places to work for in college (and only the biggest assholes got promoted)... so it's kinda bitter sweet

I hate it. I get it, but I hate it. Miss wasting an hour looking over hundreds of game cases and not buying a thing.
I also miss being able to rent a game for more than 1 night.

You must not have remembered getting ripped off when you traded in games. I thought they were going to change these places into like a meet up for people to play dungeons and dragons/board games.

This. What gets me is how many Gamestops I see. There are probably 6 of them within a 15 mile radius of my house.
As physical game sales have rapidly contracted, there simply isn't the demand necessary to support all these stores.
They are on the cusp of a painful re-org, they'll likely survive but as a much more niche retailer.

Agreed. I went to all those game stores as a kid and GameStop is pretty much the consolidation of them all (Software Etc and FuncoLand added to above). I'm still someone who purchases and prefers physical games but change happens fast. I'm glad the next console gen will have physical support but I strongly get the feeling it will be the last to do so.

I always sold my games on ebay back in the day... I couldn't ever justify the price difference for "ease"

They are still moving to this model - game tournaments as well
ETA: the first link I posted (Spawn Wave) talks about their future plans in his video

Good riddance. I haven't been in a Gamestop in ages for the shitty way they do business.
I had one guy fired back in the day. He flat refused to sell me an XBox unless I bought their $20 service plan. Said it was required.

I hope they go under overcharging everything. Giving us shite for trades.

GameStop's fall might be temporarily halted if they can survive long enough for the new consoles to come out, but that would only delay the inevitable.
They done.
They done.

Even before Gamestop was struggling I never understood why Lake Charles needs 3 of them.

I do not look forward to an all digital future. Too many games have become delisted from digital storefronts over time. Physical copies will always exist even if new disks stop being made.

This is close to where I grew up in the north metro Atlanta area. 3 within the same mile.
The one on the left is in a mall and used to be an EB. The one on the right used to be Funcoland.
And there used to a MovieStop right in front of the middle one.

There's still a place for the mom and pop stores thanks to retro games (and not just in small cities).

This.
So I went and traded in my PS4 for an Xbox last year because most of my friends are on Xbox. Ended up getting the console and like 4-5 games without paying anything.
Well I missed the show so much I decided last weekend to switch back and it damn near cost me $200 to trade in an xbox, 3 controllers, and 8 games to get a PS4, The show and Spiderman.
frick gamestop. Also let that be a lesson to show how trash Xbox is

ehh, I think the demand for retro gaming is a lot smaller than people think, but what I am talking about is the inevitable all digital future where a game gets delisted from online store fronts when the publisher loses the rights to the IP or when they no longer want to pay license fee for some type of vehicle, music, etc.

I don't know how they won't. I recently went there to look for a new PS4 controller..$59.99 for the black, more for the colored ones.
Went to Wal-Mart less than 0.5 miles away..$47.99 for any color they had.

At this point they are a geek merchandise shop as much as a game store.
