Boca Juniors have confirmed the signing of Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi, who has left Roma after 18 years at the club and joins the Argentinian side on a free transfer. De Rossi was received in the early morning at Buenos Aires’ Ezeiza airport and transported to have his medical done immediately. He is expected to join the squad for the first practice on Friday morning, and officially presented on Monday.

I know he's been a huge fan of Boca Juniors and the Argentine league for a long arse time.

To me, it's a footballing connoisseur move: wanting to play at a historic club like Boca . . . in a football crazy place like Buenos Aries . . . in a derby in La Bombonera in your final season before retirement.

It only seems odd because we usually see players simply take whatever the biggest contract offer is from MLS, China or the Middle East in this situation.

Like I said in the transfer thread, I think it's pretty bad arse and what I'd expect from De Rossi.

It will be pretty sweet to see him play (if healthy) when I go see Boca play Estudienties at La Bombonera in September.

Lol MLS inferiority complex

Any way he did this bc he didn’t want to waste his last year in MLS or china for a big pay check but a lack of passion

I typically want club legends to retire with them, but I get if they want to keep playing. It’s just weird to see them in a different stripe.

Nah even my friends that don’t really follow soccer probably at least know who he is from FIFA or randomly seeing Roma CL games

Really? Maybe I’m reaching a bit but he was the captain of Italy and Roma for a while and is nearly much always the most talked about player on the field by commentators. And from the video game angle Roma was far and away the most popular team in FIFA not named Real/Barca/PSG around 2013-2016 because of their insane pace.

There was a french forward who played in South America, was still in his peak years and always found it odd that he ended up there, rather than doing the Euro trot.

Yeah that's him

When i would check the lineups, or leading scorers he would be up there. It was odd, with his age that he was over in Western Hemisphere playing. Figured he must of been some 30+ Frenchman looking for last pay checks.

I have a client whose father used to work for Boca for a long time and I saw him today and brought this up.

I stupidly figured De Rossi signing for Boca would make for some nice small talk and not a full on, albeit level-headed, rant about how the club needs to quit wasting resources on washed up players

I don’t believe so
When he played for Roma he certainly wasn’t when Totti played for them and certainly wasn’t the main center of focus the two seasons after he (Totti) retired.

Roma is not a big club in the United States
He also didn’t captain Italy in any of the recent big tournaments they were in.
And was not the most talked about player on those teams either
