More than a dozen U.S. Marines were arrested early Thursday on a variety of charges ranging from human smuggling to drug-related charges, according to officials.
The U.S. Marine Corps said in a news release that 16 Marines were arrested during a Battalion formation at Camp Pendleton in California.
"Information gained from a previous human smuggling investigation precipitated the arrests," officials said.

I'd be curious how Marines were involved in Human Trafficking
Drug ring busts are common in the military

If you would have asked us to guess from:
Navy, Air Force, Army, Marines, Space Force and the Cost Guard
I would have guessed Marines in 0.1 seconds. Something about them that attracts the most misfits and messed up members of society.

Cartel infiltrating the Marines?

I’ve watched YouTube vids about gangs infiltrating the armed forces. Pics of soldiers throwing up gang signs and stuff like that, so maybe?

Someone I know was an OSI officer for the Air Force and he definitely saw some shitty people. It is just like the gen pop, there are some great ones and some shitty ones. You can kick out the really shitty ones but you can’t catch them all.

I'm assuming the rest of the battalion was also punished for this

just like it is your character that should be judged and not the color of your skin.
so it should be that your character is judged and not if you have worn a military uniform.
wearing a uniform does not give you valor.
you can have served in the armed forces and still be charged with stolen valor.

Let's see them try to smuggle in jail.

I don’t know much about military prison but people make it sound like it’s worse than civilian prison, though I don’t see how

What do you think it is?

Civilian Prison: Imagine North Baton Rouge where it’s super hard to escape from and there are metal bars keeping you in.
Military Prison: it’s kinda like being locked in Kansas. Boring and flat but better than North BR.
guards are military units, you have to keep your area clean or else you will get punished, no fighting at all, you can end up in solitary confinement for up to 6 months, better food but you can’t bring it back to your cell, and options to undergo training such as in carpentry so you can get a job afterwards.

Military Prison
I have a good friend that did 2 years in a military prison a few years back for bringing cocaine onto a Naval base while he was in.
He said the general population of the prison was made up of all ranks, from Admirals all the way down. The officers and enlisted wore different uniforms in jail, but he said seniority was based on who had been in the longest and not on rank.
He has since turned his life around doing air conditioning work and is doing really well. I use his story of redemption often when questioning criminals/addicts who have gone down the wrong path.
