What happens when, one day, a team like the Lakers retires all Jersey numbers?

Do they go to letters? Symbols?
Like one day in 2142, the Lakers are going to have a superstar nicknamed Steaksauce because his Jersey “number” is A1
I feel like they didn’t think this through.

I feel like the Yankees would be a better team for this question. They've already retired about twice as many numbers as the Lakers. They'll retire anyone's number.

I think the Bears declared they were done retiring numbers after Ditka's was retired. I guess they could just do that.

The Sacramento Kings, Trailblazers & Pistons have more numbers retired than the Lakers as well. The Lakers are very selective .
Not even George Mikans number is retired nor HOF/ ex League MVP Bob McAdoo ( who won 2 rings as a Lakers role player).

They can start using irrational and imaginary numbers and such.
Substituting numbers for names by way of explanation:
"Pi inbounds the ball to the Square Root of Two, who lobs it to 23i for the tomahawk dunk."

This sounds like a bad stand up bit you heard.

The real question is, what about a college basketball team? Like, look at a program like Duke. They have retired a ton of numbers, and in college basketball you aren’t allowed to have any numbers that exceed the number of fingers on each hand.
