I shoot a 45-70 all deer season. hardly ever have a 100 yard shot, mostly 50-60 yards. open sights too. usually it's boom, go pickup the deer or clean miss. it's easy to find bullets for a 45-75 as well. them 325 grain bullets leave a mark.

35 wheelin is great, just no need to reinvent the wheel.

I’m thinking about going with the CVA Scout V2 35 Whelen. Anyone have one of these?

35 Whelen is better in every way

Besides being less available and more expensive... At least in my parts.

.35 Whelen is a .35-06. Much better round than the .45-70.
If you want old, go with a .38-55. Low recoil, but still Wacks em.

My cousin in MS absolutely loves his .35. Said for the shots he typically takes, it will do anything his .270 will do.

This is what I was referring to in my first post. Hunted with a buddy's, great gun for $400, will probably get one myself. His has Bergara stamped on the barrel, but the newer ones dont. They are still made in Spain by the same mfr as bergara.

I have a CVA Scout in 35 but it's the older model. Had it about 10 years. Solid rifle bullet goes where you aim it. I shoot 180 Barnes TSX bullets, expensive but deadly.

Have owned one for 3 years and had to buy another one for my dad because it kept ending up going to the stand with him. Great rifle without breaking the bank, zero complaints or issues from me. Unless I'm sitting long powerlines it's my all season rifle.

Hunt with the 35 whelen on every hunt , unless it's a long food plot . If the bullet hits the deer , it's going down . Great rifle .

I own one but haven’t shot it yet. Is the recoil similar to shooting a 12 gauge slug?

Very sililar. I one one and it is not bad standing but shooting from a bench will tenderize the shoulder in a heartbeat

Depends on the round. Trapdoor loads which will drop just about anything are more of a push than a kick. Some of that Buffalo Bore stuff will rattle your sphincter.

Just to add, if you buy a 35 Whelen over the 45-70 because you think it'll have less recoil, you'll be greatly disappointed.

I bought a .45-70 a couple years ago in the Walmart gun sale. Eventually put a scope on it and setup a bench in the back yard to sight it in. Put about 3 rounds through it and my shoulder was done . Haven't shot it again since and it's still not finished being sighted in. One day i'll man up again and finish the job.
