EBR officials file lawsuit over Iberville aquadams, fear it could could divert flooding

The United States Army Corps of Engineers said Monday that Iberville Parish does not need a permit to operate aqua dams in the event of a flood because they would be placed on a parish road and not in the wetlands or a waterway.
That announcement comes at a time where East Baton Rouge Parish is at odds with Iberville Parish over the aqua dams that would block water from Bayou Manchac from spilling into the Spanish Lake Basin. The concern is Iberville could possibly flood residents in East Baton Rouge Parish if the dams are deployed.
quote:
"I don't want any harm on Baton Rouge residents, but in the same breath, I have to protect my people," Ourso said. "Hopefully everything fairs out well."
The test of the aqua dams today comes at a time where East Baton Rouge Parish is formulating a plan to take action against Iberville. Two weeks ago, the parish attorney's office held a meeting with the Director of Transportation and Drainage. Attempts to find out what was discussed and what East Baton Rouge is going to do to block Iberville were not immediately clear. Lea Ann Batson told WBRZ two weeks ago she would not discuss their strategies.
quote:
This year, East Baton Rouge Parish asked what permits Iberville received for the aqua dams. Ourso said he didn't need one since he took an oath to protect and serve the people.
Today, the United States Army Corps of Engineers agreed that Iberville does not need a permit for the aqua dams. A spokesperson said usually the federal agency doesn't get involved in parish to parish disputes

We need taller aqua dams on our side.

EBR should invest in a series of 20-inch pumps to shoot the water over the dams.

Let both parishes meet at Sonic.

Uclub may flood. I bet they don’t have flood insurance. If only they had a parish president doing something proactive instead of reactive.

Why wouldn't the put the dams on the other side of the Spanish Lake Basin?
It's a flood basin. It needs to be filled with flood water when the rivers/bayous rise.

Lawsuits will start flying if a temporary man-made dam constructed without permission caused people to flood upriver. And they should.
Everyone involved knows the risk of this.

Can someone explain to me where exactly this aqua dam will be placed?
Would this run the length of Bayou Paul/Manchac Rd from LA 30 to I-10?

Along Manchac Rd to keep Bayou Manchac from going into the Spanish Lake area.
In 2016 water going over Manchac Rd and into the Spanish Lake area saved everyone’s arse along Bayou Fountain.

"I don't want to hear nothing about a bridge in West Baton Rouge Parish," said J. Mitchell Ourso, Iberville's parish president. "Iberville deserves this bridge. We have all the industry and is producing the traffic that's causing this congestion."

And in the process put 6 feet of water in a bunch of homes on the low side of Bluff Road right next to Spanish Lake. This is really just the Iberville President pandering for votes, as the amount of people helped by this will be far outweighed by the people hurt, but the ones hurt can't vote for him/any future opponents

Blue Bayou for the fricking win(loss). Every summer they turn the Highland/Old Perkins/I-10 area into a disaster in the evenings. I don't understand why BB doesn't have to use that giant parking lot across Highland with the skybridge anymore, everybody parks off of Old Perkins then needs to go left at 5 pm

U-club will be fine. In 2016 the Hughes the water got was about 1” high at the apron of my drive. It’s the back of CCL if anything that will get flooded from the aqua dams as the back of CCL is where bayou Manchac and Alligator bayou meet.
