You can now pay to attend one in India.

Where in India, when are you going, how long will you be there, and what types of things interest you?

Ninety percent of first time India goers do the Golden Triangle- Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. We did that plus Goa.
Delhi and Agra are two of the most fantastic places in the world. The Mughal kings make the Europeans look like paupers.
In retrospect, I could have skipped Goa and Jaipur. Siem Reap in Cambodia and Chaing Mai, Thailand are infinitely more interesting. Angkor Wat and the temples near it are very special.
My favorite hotel anywhere is the Imperial in New Delhi. Nehru held his cabinet meetings in the coffee shop until the Brits left. He also had a suite there he'd use for banging Mountbatten's wife.
The Oberoi in Agra is the only hotel in the restricted area by the Taj Mahal, so you have unobstructed views from your room.
We went in the summer and it was hot. But I am from Louisiana and heat doesn't bother me. It's also cheaper and less crowded.

I’ve been to Bangalore. It’s all regionally specific. Where are you going and why?
Get vaccinated before you go. Only drink bottled water. Do not expect toilet paper. Do not rent a car. Power occasionally goes out and it is perfectly normal. Most speak English well. You won’t get robbed but leave yourself open either. Customs is extremely tight, armed military, etc. Get your visa online instead of the paper process direct from their government.

Stay at a big chain hotel. Don’t eat any street food. Also Indian weddings in India aren’t as fun as the ones down here. I’m Indian, and I’ve experienced both in the last 2 years.

I went to an Indian wedding a few months ago in Buffalo. (frick Buffalo, total shithole...but that's besides the point)
The wedding was the most fun wedding I've ever been to. They know how to get down and the food, of course, was wonderful.

I did Ahmedabad and Anand for two weddings and did the Golden Triangle after. Total two weeks.
Be careful of street vendors, both food and regular items. I was with a friend in Anand who grew up there so he kept me shielded from the bad food stands. Really happy because vada pav was my favorite dish the whole trip.
A lot of people will beg you or try to sell. Don't even look at them is the quickest way to brush them off.
Hired drivers in each city in the Golden Triangle, and that made life very easy. Spoke English and got us everywhere we wanted fast. Also stayed in 4 and 5 star hotels because they were real cheap. Tuk Tuks were really cheap and fun to get from place to place too.
We always carried TP or baby wipes with us because we weren't completely immune to delhi belly. You never know when the bathrooms aren't up to par or you have to pay so the piece of mind helps.
I kept a bandana to cover my face with all the dust, and always watch your step.
Pink City Restaurant in Jaipur was fantastic.

Been there three times with HS basketball teams when I taught and coached at Americans schools in the region. Twice to Delhi and once to Mumbai.
Echo what was said about chain hotels, not eating street food, etc.
Not only should you only drink bottled water, also avoid ice unless you're certain it's commercial...i.e, not from tap water.
Also as mentioned, watch your step. Potholes, uneven sidewalks. I suggest travel insurance that includes some kind of medivac insurance.
This. It's excellent.
Get the travel insurance w/medivac.
