What’s the best Age of Empires game?

Is it unanimous that it’s AOE II? I just bought AOE III off steam and it’s a lot more empty than I remember. AOE II is installing right now and I’m excited because I haven’t played it since I was in middle school.
I replayed Kingdom Come Deliverance recently and saw some hype for an update that adds Cumans to AOE II.. is that an actual update or were they referencing a mod?
Also, is online still active for these games?

You must be young if you say 3 is the best. Aoe2 was a classic, and the DE version is coming out this fall.

I grew up playing 1 and 3, and 3 is my favorite. I bought 2 a few years ago and it felt a A lot like 1. All the different civilizations in 2 felt very bland and too similar.

Yes, AOE2 is widely regarded as the best Age out there. It is by far the most popular in terms of activity on Multiplayer and on Twitch audience.

So the Cumans have been announced as one of the 4 new civilizations being added to AOE2: Definitive Edition. Bear in mind that there have been several other expansions since the Conquerors came out way back when. I like to use this website to look at the civ tech trees.

Online is a little fragmented at the moment. Some people play online on Steam but the majority of people play online on a platform called Voobly. Vooby is a 100x better experience than playing on Steam for several reasons:
1) Voobly is a better experience performance-wise. Voobly runs on Userpatch 1.5 which means better balance-changes, better villager pathing, and a smoother overall experience
2) Voobly lobby is way nicer than Steam's HD pile of shite they call a lobby
3)Voobly allows spectate mode. And it's really fricking cool. Also, every online game by default is recorded so you can go back and watch your games and see what you did wrong.
AOE 2 is my favorite game of all time as you can probably tell so if you have any questions please ask away. Also, if you ever want to play on Voobly, let me know.

I’ll have to look into. My new job has a 4 on and 4 off schedule so I have more free time than I know what to do with

Yeah Conquerers is the GOAT. However, I loved the streamlining 3 did when building an army.

t90official is phenomenal. Hands down the best caster. Basically the equivalent of Tony Romo doing the play by play for NFL.

Yeah. I wish they could remake AOEII with the streamlining and graphics that III has.

You're in luck. AOE 2 DE will be released soon (it's in the beta stage right now) with updated graphics.
