Ive gone back and forth for a while on wether I want to repower or sell my boat. I think I have decided to repower at the end of the year. I’ve done plenty of research and reading on different brands. I’m coming to the OB to hear more personal opinions on brands and models.

I have a 22’ Blue Wave 220 V-Bay. The hull is in great shape, which is the main reason for the repower rather than sell. The boat does everything that I need it to do, I just don’t trust the 2-stroke HPDI that’s on it.

The two brands that I have looked at the most are Suzuki and Yamaha. Im trying to stay in the 4 cylinder class to save some weight. My current 6 cylinder 225 makes the boat sit a little arse heavy.

Currently I’m leaning towards the 200 Zuke. I haven’t decided on mechanical or FBW yet. Main reason is they are currently offering a 6 year warranty.

What motors does the OB recommend/not recommend?

Both great motors. I say go Yamaha 4 stroke only because I’ve had them and they’ve stood up well.

Maybe Kemo Sabe will chime in. Dude is on the water everyday fishing. He knows

Buy whatever the max horsepower rating for the boat, both motors perform well.

just don't get a mercury unless you enjoy breaking down

Yamaha and Suzuki are both great engines. Suzuki will be less expensive. Just make sure there is someone local to service them wherever you live

i have a Yamaha 200 I4 on my frontier which is pretty similar to your Vbay. I top out at 50-53mph depending on load. i get 3-4 MPG depending on how hard i run it and this info is from the NMEA info gauges. Zero issues in 3 years. Its kind of loud for a 200 but sounds good Overall i like it. Its efficient and reliable.

From the speeds ive seen on other frontiers or similar sized hulls it looks like the zuke have a little more top end to them due to turning a bigger prop. The yamaha power is there for these lighter hulls. I pop up on plane quickly and it gets up and goes when mashing the throttle.

I have a 08 verado and have replaced a steering cylinder (had to buy the whole thing for a blown seal), power steering pump (not a normal hydarulic steering system), and cracked tilt cylinder in the past year. The tilt cylinder is what it is although pretty strange, but the steering system is stupid. It's more shite that can break and those replacements cost almost 2x what a whole new sea star system would have cost.
