Maybe we need to fire our medical staff instead of our coaches

Maybe it's time we replace our medical staff. Kind of disturbing that it took an outside doctor to figure this out.
Replacing the doctors isn't crazy. The Saints did it a couple of years ago when they were having problems with injuries.

He went to a doctor outside of LSU’s medical staff Sunday morning who diagnosed the median nerve problem. An MRI showed no structural issues. Henry underwent laser treatment and dry needling to break up the scar tissue, and within minutes the nerve was firing correctly again, Jeff Henry said. He then went outside and threw without issue.

Yep. It worked too.

Dr. James Andrews is an LSU alum yet he’s employed by Auburn. Wtf is that about? We need to bring him home like Woodward.

Playing Devil’s Advocate here
Obviously training staff could tell it wasn’t serious
The team Dr. would have looked at him Monday
Henry’s parents were here for Supers, his Dad being a pitching coach (could be wrong as to his exact job) knew of a Dr. that he wanted him to see
I don’t think LSU’s staff would have had trouble diagnosing, his Dad just decided to go ahead & get the ball rolling
Nowhere does it say this was he has had this issue before

Andrews' group is employed by many (also Alabama, the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Washington Redskins). I have a friend who works for them in orthopedics (Ole Miss alum) and travels with the Alabama football team every week (Andrews doesn't). Dr. Andrews treats athletes from all over the country, both college and professional, and would treat LSU athletes as well if consulted to do so. There's no "wtf is that about" to it. He owns a business and has a lot of clients. It's also not surprising his medical center in Birmingham is employed by two major universities in that state. He's not shutting down his practice to exclusively treat LSU athletes. That would be a very poor business decision on his part. I also haven't seen anything that says Andrews or his staff are the doctors that treated Henry.

We've all spent a lot of time discussing arm issues. Maybe our team needs a fresh set of eyes from some different doctors.

I understand. I wasn’t trying to disparage him, and I know he’s treated LSU athletes in the past. Just seems that LSU would want him on staff. I know he’s on Auburn’s sidelines during home games.

Yeah, Andrews group may be the "official doctors of XYZ program" but they will treat all comers. Also, I believe he is personally practicing more out of Pensacola these days, and is semi-retired.
Pretty much any "team doctors" also have non-team patients and a "day job" with a local group/hospital.

Why not both

The current medical field is on the fence of whether or not laser is proven to be an effective treatment (It obviously is). Insurance company's today still do not cover laser therapy as a therapeutic way to relieve muscle, ligamentus and joint pain. I am unsure of this medical doctors perspective on this matter but that could be a reason why he did not receive laser treatment. Hopefully in the coming year laser will be used as a standard of care prior to other more invasive therapies such as steroid shots, etc.

Yep, Andrews is not young anymore (he's 77) and when someone says they were treated by Dr. Andrews, I can fairly assume most are being treated by one of the other numerous doctors employed by his medical center. I'd venture to guess he doesn't perform many surgeries anymore. Very rare to see 77 year olds still actively practicing medicine and performing surgery

But was he throwing 95?

I have a six year old pit bull who was literally dying from osteoarthritis. She was in so much pain she could barely walk.
I took her to 5 different vets in Louisiana and Mississippi and none of them did anything to help her.
Finally, I took her to Dr. Jacob Church in Ocean Springs. He put her on a new medication and literally the very next day she was moving around as well as she has in years.
He previously had saved the life of one of my other dogs when I was living in the MS coast.
Point being, not all doctors are the same. Just because they have the same qualifications doesn’t mean they’re equally good at what they do. Some are just better and more knowledgeable than others.
Same as with any other profession.
Reevaluating the medical staff is not some radical idea. If not pleased with the bottom line results, then they should absolutely be looked at to determine their role if any in the reoccurring problems we’ve seen with injuries.
I know it’s not an apples to apples comparison, but the point stands.

Advocate
So this new Dr. gave him the same treatment he had at LSU on his elbow
quote:
Henry soon underwent an MRI on his right arm.
Team physician Dr. Mark Field looked at it twice and saw nothing wrong.
Henry’s personal doctor in Birmingham, Alabama, viewed it.
So did a radiologist.
No one saw structural damage.

Can we get him the hell out of Birmingham and give him Cortana mall or something to use as his new HQ?

I’ve been saying this. Yes, throwing a baseball is unnatural and damages are bound to happen, but not at this rate. People tried to normalize losing half our staff to injury the past 2 years but it’s just not realistic. The 1 and 2 year long recovery for minor injuries are not normal either.

Some of it is due to how short the season in college baseball is. For instance, a spot on the 60 day DL in MLB could effectively keep you out the entire season in a 3.5 month college season, and wouldn't in an 6 month long MLB season. Some of these guys may very well have recovered from minor injuries but not soon enough to be back before the end of a college season. Henry, for example, missed a month of baseball before returning last week. In the grand scheme, that's not a very long absence for an arm injury, even a minor one. Marceaux, same thing.

Yep. This shite is too common to be a coincidence.
Also, after seeing how these guys perform once they return, I have no confidence that they'll help us even after they "heal". Caleb Gilbert never came back. Eric Walker did nothing special this year. Hilliard regressed. Latz never returned. Storz has thrown about three innings in two years. Henry returned and promptly left.
Nobody is coming back from this better. Hell, everyone seems to regress once they reach LSU, but the pitching staff certainly does not seem to return anywhere near their pre-surgery performances.

Most of LSU's teams utilize Baton Rouge Orthopedic Clinic physicians. This is the same practice the Saints switched over to as well. My personal opinion is a change in the training staff is needed. The Pelicans just recently hired away the trainer from the Phoenix Suns whom many consider the best in the business of basketball. It's all about tailoring the conditioning and treatment of players. Something isn't right within the training staff of the LSU baseball program. There are to many ailments, sore arms, injuries, etc. I highly doubt it is due to the work of BROC.

Don’t know anything about BR Ortho.
But Kevin Darr in Covington (Covington Orthopedic) is as elite an orthopedist as exists on earth.
Can’t hurt to at least reach out to him if looking to make a change.
