What I don't really get is why Walt's only other career choice was being a Pontiac Aztec-driving loser HS teacher. He's clearly brilliant, and even if he knocked up Skyler, he wouldn't be the first guy who had to try and make it with a wife and kid.
Jessica Hecht was born to play these roles, btw, the role of the ex lover/wife/other woman who is better than you. I know it's irrational, but if I ever meet her, I might have to slap her just for the hell of it.

How is it a mystery? Whenever he doesn't get his way he turns into an angry a-hole who refuses to budge b/c he is overly prideful. He was probably a huge prick to Gretchen for an extended period of time which is why she left him in the first place.
Odds are he constantly rubbed people the wrong way at other job opportunities to the point he had no other option than to become a high school teacher in New Mexico.

i was always curious about this, too
i assumed he was just incredibly difficult to work with (b/c of the arrogance and god complex) and high-end chemistry jobs aren't likely too common in New Mexico and he burned all of his bridges quickly
