Mainieri says that Watson was right to get hosed by the cutoff play. I disagree

Takes yourself out of a big inning. And the runner would have been safe at home anyway.

You only disagree because it didnt work. No one would be saying anything if it had worked like expected or if Cabrera actually made it to 2nd like he should have.

Team Sweep right there

Fundamental rule of baseball is not to make first or third out of the inning at third base....eta this is incorrect. This ended up being the second out of the inning

Clearly killed the momentum of the inning

At least he didn’t throw a player under the bus for once.

But I agree you can’t expect to go 1st to 3rd on a shallow hit in CF where there was very little chance for play at the plate. Gotta be smarter than that.

They should have been up 6 or 7 to zip if they stick to fundamentals in base running and getting runs home from 3rd with less than 2 outs. This plus all the walks have been the biggest failures on the field this year. It has cost them a number of games this year over and above the injury and roster issues.

In regards to the 2 outs made on the base paths yesterday this was by far the less egregious one and was debatably the correct play by Watson. The mistake by Garza was a way bigger momentum killer in my opinion.

Cabrera needs to get to second there.

That's about as dumb a statement he could have made. Why is he trying to protect this player in this situation, when he all too often throws his players under the bus?

Anyone arguing that this was the right play is a fool.

You don’t run into a sure out early in the game with less than two outs when the runner heading home was going to score if he backpedaled home. THAT WAS BAD SITUATIONAL AWARENESS and an example of Mainieri’s reckless base running philosophy.

Caberra should have been on 2nd which is the biggest gripe. If you're going to get in a rundown, the man in 1st needs to advance to where Watson was.

That's on Watson, not CPM. He has to read that throw high out of his hand. He was being aggressive and he got caught. Garza missing 2nd base was really bad, but again not CPMs fault. The bases are there for a reason

You should never make the 1st or 3rd out at 3rd base. That is a general baseball rule. So yes, it was a mistake.

It wasn’t a frickup mistake, it was a hustle mistake. The latter doesn’t lose you games.

ETA: That type of baserunning mistake is the same as an infielder making a diving stab and then trying to make a throw that would never result in an out. You just can’t be mad about “hustle mistakes” IMO.

ETAA: If he’d gotten to third safely it’s the equivalent of stealing the base. The only reason it ducks is it was the 1st out of the inning.

Watson doesn’t know how to run bases.

Maybe if he would have been told that what he did Saturday was dumb, he would have learned not to make another dumb baserunning mistake on Sunday.
