This is a great thread. Wife and I are interested in putting in a pool in a couple of years and it's good to have some ideas of what you guys have done and the relative costs to budget.

I forgot to take pictures last night when I got home but found this one on my phone. You can't see it in this pic, but there's about a 3 ft tall waterfall on right end of the pool. Also, in the cutout on the far left side there's an under water bench there with jets pointed at your lower back.
The bench was the best thing we added to the pool. It's great for just sitting there with friends/family and enjoying a cool adult beverage.
This price also included a lot of extra concrete to connect my existing patio with the pool deck on the near side of the pic. It also included a retaining wall where you see the little solar lights outside of the pool because our back yard was sloped. Looking back at the pic, you can barely see the underwater bench being cleaned by the Polaris when this pic was taken.
We built it in 2015.

You paid 28k for that including all the work and pumps and decking?
I typically say if you want a basic pool with white plaster/brick coping/ceramic tile(starting point) you're looking at about $500 a LF of the perimeter. So if you want a 12x30 size pool, you're starting at 42k in general. That's a good ballpark of what they will start at in my area.

Yep, by the biggest pool builder in our area.
I did have it built in October though trying to take advantage of their slow season. The guy told me in the fall and winter they usually do them for just about cost to keep their crews busy so they don't lose them during the winter.

You won't see a lot of return on what you put into them and for some people, it is a deterrent if your house is for sale since it adds to the maintenance and insurance costs considerably.
Kitchen and bath upgrades are your best investment/returns in upgrading a house. A pool is just a hole in the ground you put water and money into.
