Anybody have any good rec's for a rasberry pi-based classic game emulator?

i don't want to bog down multiple HDMIs for an NES Classic, SNES Classic, Genesis Classic, etc plus i want the entire Neo Geo library, so i figured this is the best route. there are a ton of options on ebay but i was curious if y'all any experience or recs

If you're going eBay route, just buy a preloaded retropie SD card. I believe a 32gb card can be bought for $15-25ish. But you can obviously go a different size card depending on how many games you want. The larger the card, the more PS1 & N64 games will be loaded on it if you're looking for those consoles.
Order the raspberry pi 3 from Amazon separately for $30ish.
Then just insert the SD card into the rp3 and plug it in and it's ready to play. The first time you plug in a controller, you'll have to configure the controller & map out the buttons as you want. But other than the controller, the preloaded cards on eBay are literally plug in & play.
Cases for the RP3 aren't necessary but are available on Amazon if you want to customize the look of it for a few extra bucks

It's way easier than you expect it to be.

Set mine up last summer, and I'm pretty sure this is the tutorial I used.
Much easier than I expected, and worth it. My kids always talk about the video-game system that "daddy made."
Connect it to your WiFi, and transferring ROMs from the PC to the Raspberry Pi is a breeze.

Going to have to grab one of these when I get back from vacation.
I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't gone after these guys selling the cards with the ROMs on them, or put pressure on Ebay to ban selling them.

me too. i figure it's only a matter of time so i wanted to secure one. i mean basically once you have this, you're set for life
for $120 or so you can get the rasperrby pi 3+, a box (NES, SNES, or Genesis if you want), a controller, HDMI, power, and a 64GB card with 8k games

You mean they're charging to gather, organize, and pre-load ROMs for you, to include all the box art and in many cases UI improvements?
Not everyone has time to dick around finding workable ROMs, box art, etc.

It's one thing to download a movie off of Pirate Bay. It's another matter entirely to take that movie, burn it to a blu ray and sell it. Oh but you spent time on making the box art!

RetroPie uses a scraper to get game information/boxart/etc., for you once you download the ROM. It also sorts everything for you by console. And if you Google 'roms' the top 5 sites all have thousands of workable ROMs.
The people selling them are downloading a bundle and dragging it onto an SD card.
That's it.

i think i found the best (Although somewhat pricey) overall solution
GPD XD+
it's a portable unit, about $240 that can play through N64/DreamCast. it also has an HDMI out, so you can use this as your console as well (it has bluetooth so that's your controller solution).
so you have (1) portability and (2) perfect emulation that can be played on a modern TV

Not quite. Everything they put on a card can be done from retropie itself. So you’re correct there. You can buy an sd card from them and re-customize everything from theme to scraper style to whatever else you want. But again as mentioned earlier in this thread, you’re paying for convenience. Not everyone wants to look up rom packs for 15k games or however much the card holds. Not everyone wants to figure out how to get to sselph’s scraper or go into retro arch to customize shaders & overlays per console. Not everyone wants to DL all the themes to see which one they like best. These cards typically have custom splash screens installed, newer themes installed with video preview of all games, custom play lists already set up other than broken down by emulator, etc.... Face it, some people just want to plug & play with a system that looks great from the start without having to do manual customization for it.
