He's usually pretty pumped up about what they're eating for the day.

Marceaux starting means one of a few things.

Either:

A) There isn't much faith in Walker to win the game, which is a bad sign for the rest of the tournament.

B) Henry is back, and is throwing game two.

I can't believe that pitching Marceaux over Walker would have to do with Mainieri believing that Walker is the better option for game 2.

Mainieri probably believes Walker is a better matchup vs ASU than Marceaux.

Our best needs to be against Arizona St.
2 guys with almost identical stats

That is how you lose regionals you play to get out of your regional.

My opinion (worth nothing) Walker was not a good match up with SB. Henry is at a spot where he can go deeper and then hand it off to Hess and Peterson against ASU. Walker then throws on Sunday with USM/ASU having to win twice with depleted pitching.

Paul must feel that Henry can give him 80 pitches Saturday

I think he’s trying to save as much of his bullpen as he can for Arizona St

This makes no sense. The Super Regional is not guaranteed, and is a week away. It also may start on Saturday, instead of Friday. Marceaux throwing Friday, or Saturday will not screw anything up for next week.

Walker is ok, but why have him go against a No. 1 pitcher when the better play is him against the No. 3

This. I'm really not sure what the problem is here. Try not to use too many pitchers against SB on Friday, then see how many quality innings you can get out of Henry on Saturday against a better opponent and hand it off to our best long relief guy, if necessary.

I don’t think anyone expected this. Everyone assumed walker or Henry. I think we have 3 good starters either way and they all will pitch this weekend. So I’m ok with it. Maybe coach didn’t wanna put a freshman up against as st.

That's not really what I meant. It's pretty usual for a 1 seed in a regional to throw their #2 or #3 starter in game 1, saving your top guy for game 2.

If we are judging off the past few outings, Marceaux is clearly our #1 guy. So, throwing him in game 1 means that Mainieri either thinks Henry is ready to roll (and views him as our best option), or Henry is not ready but he doesn't have enough faith in Walker to get past Stony Brook (and in this case he would be starting against ASU...which is why I said, that wouldn't be a good outlook for the rest of the regional).

I disagree.

Paul must feel that Marceaux can give him 90 pitches on Friday.

This is another line of thought that makes sense, if it plays out perfectly. Marceaux gives you 7 innings, and hopefully you build up a safe lead. Then we don't touch Fontenot, Hess or Peterson in game 1. Then we throw the farm at ASU Saturday to try to win. If Walker is on, he is capable of shutting down anybody, but if he isn't then we have a fully loaded pen ready to keep us in it.

True, but I think our top "guy" this weekend is Henry followed by Hess and Peterson/Fontenot.

PM probably heard Hanni say he wanted walker or henry friday. so, he picked marceaux just to piss hanni off.

Assuming Marceaux doesnt throw a CG you would hope score runs and only have to use one arm from the bullpen not named Hess, Peterson, or Fontenot.

I think, when healthy, Henry is the top guy as well. Hopefully this means that Mainieri knows he is healthy, and is ready to roll him out. It's just speculation from our part, because we don't know the full situation. Probably only Baseball Tiger 17 does.

In this format I can see going with the SP that gives you the best chance to pitch effectively (team match-up) while eating-up innings to save the BP. If Marceaux can go 6-7IP, we will be primed for a W and looking good for the rest of the regional. Get that 1st W, and it is all arms on deck for GM2 in the winner's bracket.

We all know Henry has the stuff but let’s be honest the last time we saw him against South Carolina, he didn’t look that great. My only guess is that PM figures Marceaux gives you 7 or 8 Friday and we have every bullpen arm that matters locked and loaded for Saturday.
