Truck Board Rumor: 2021 Tundra to get 450 hp Twin Turbo V6

Thought about starting this thread on the OT but figured it might be more relevant to OB's interests.

The guys at TFL got a anonymously sourced email from someone claiming to work at the Toyota San Antonio plant who claims that the redesigned 2021 Tundra will get a 450 HP twin turbo v6, a hybrid option and that Toyota will be killing the reliable dinosaur 5.7 v8.

Tacoma needs something akin to the 2.7EB. Thing would be a beast although what makes Tacomas last through atomic blasts is the fact they used to not change anything.

One has to assume that Toyota has tested the concept to death. Assuming they will use some variant of the their GR (3.5L) engine, they already have a 471HP hybrid plant for the LC500h/LS500h flagship cars.
Research in that area may have yielded a truck application with a twin turbo (non-hybrid) variant of the now proven 3.5L block (which they increasingly use in everything, Camrys, Highlanders, Tacomas, Lexus cars, Land Cruiser Prados for China, etc.)

The only trim you can get the twin turbo ecoboost with Ford is the Raptor and F150 Limited. I assume this Toyots engine will be a premium option as well so with the elimination of the 5.7 v8, I wonder what their "every man" engine will be. I suppose its possible they develop a new v8 but I wouldn't think a classic v6 will satisfy people the way the EcoBoost has.

I'm not sure about the rumor the 5.7 is going away. If it is, watch what will replace it in the Land Cruiser.

Why would they get rid of the 5.7? That makes no sense at all. I don't know why they even have the other engine, what is it like a 4.6 V8. It gets basically the same MPG and they are harder to resale.

Kind of sounds like ford and the ecoboost.
Have a 5.0L V8, 3.5L turbo 6, and 2.7L turbo 6.
Just diversifying the truck so more BAWS that dont actually use a truck can now have a truck and look cool.

It's falling behind and it was never fuel economical in the first place. Again, I'm not convinced it is going away anytime soon. The Toyota powers-that-be love that motor, even in the international market.

Isn't the Tundra heavy though? That's part of the problem? Or no? Its extremely reliable though and that's why most buy the Tundra fuel mileage be damned.
I think they'd be idiots to drop the 5.7 until they have another motor in the truck for at least a year if not 2-3 years that's proven some reliability.
If they have something like the early Ford EB problems, it would crush the Tundra market.

Like I said, they must have tested it to death. Toyota doesn't change an A/C control without testing it to destruction.
They're certainly not going to fiddle with production models of their flagship vehicle for the U.S. market without being certain, especially on drivetrains.
I'm not saying they're perfect - I'm a Toyota/Lexus guy through and through, but they make the odd mistake and get recalls, too. But their engineering decisions are always very methodical. They're not betting the ship on a mirage, in other words.

Not true. All V6 ecoboost(in the trucks) are twin turbo. They come in 2 sizes and 3 power outputs. 2.7l, 3.5l, and 3.5l high output in the raptor and limited.

I mean they all do this for the most part. I'm not saying Toyota and Honda don't do it better. But how many guys are simply going to take their word?
I just think they'd be crazy to straight drop the 5.7 when the 4.6 sucks and add something new. Phase something in and the 5.7 out at least.

For all I know the twin turbo will be the standard and the hybrid will be the "optional" engine.
And, like I said, the 5.7 is very popular with them - anything they put in the Land Cruiser they absolutely stand behind. So, they will be likewise convinced of its replacement. Now, if they're taking the U.S. Tundra down another road, we'll just have to see where that heads, but it would be uncharted territory since the 5.7's introduction.

Is the Tundra heavy? Is there any other reasons it doesn't get better gas mileage outside of the 5.7? Because the 4.6 is pretty bad too right?

Relative to the F150 with the aluminum panels? Yes. The motor is heavy, too.

The 4.6 is not efficient, either. It's an engine for initial cost purposes.
Frankly, that was true for lots of V6 options in full size pickups when they exploded in the 1990s - it was an initial cost, not a CAFE thing - at least until the "Super 6s" started to compete on power and economy with the poorer V8s in the market (and the current Eco and Hybrid motors).

450 HP twin Turbo V6...
Just really no need for this in a Tundra. They are plenty quick and have good towing range for 98% of their customers. Bigger engine and it couldn’t tow more... no doubt. Could it stop a much bigger tow load.?. This is the problem. I have a hard time believing they would put this much motor in a Tundra when virtually none of the customer base needs it.

wish they would put a 4.6 or 4.7 in them

Toyota focuses on reliability and stability, but when they make changes, they make leaps forward.
