There's a law that you cannot buy alcohol at Walmart between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. in West Baton Rouge Parish.
Is it like this in other parishes or counties?

I've been denied trying to buy beer to go fishing plenty times. It's pretty common

Pretty much outside of New Orleans and casinos, this is the norm in Louisiana. Otherwise, a lot more bars would be open past 2 am.

I guess this is probably the first time in about 40 years I've tried to buy alcohol before 6 am. I was just kind of surprised.

Try buying wine or liquor at a grocery store in some other states. There’s nothing on the shelf at any hour of the day. 
You have to go to the “liquor store” for that. Totally seems like a law Louisiana would have, so I’m grateful our state is not that idiotic. Basically, we got one thing right.

So go to someplace other than Walmart to buy it. Problem solved.
