While it was VERY unlikely they could get someone as good as Beilein this late in the game (or at all), this would be a tough pill to swallow if I were a Michigan fan.

Zero college or HC experience. At least Hardaway had deep ties in the Memphis HS/AAU recruiting scene before being named HC. Howard has none of that. It may be Chris Mullin 2.0

Mullin had never been a coach period, he worked in the front office in the NBA. Also, Mullin wasn't that bad at SJU. He walked into a disaster and they became average, which is basically what SJU has been for most of the last two decades. Relationship management was his big problem.

Steve Lavin was the HC of St. Johns for 5 years prior to Mullin. He had a winning record every season (except 2012 when he sat out most to the year for cancer treatment); and took St. John's to the NCAAT twice (they hadn't been to the tournament in 7 years before Lavin arrived). In fact, Lavin took the to the NCAAT the year he was let go.

Mullin was hired and proceeded to post 3 straight losing seasons (overall) and never had a winning record in Big East play.

Because 11 players left when Lavin was fired. Again, they were a disaster when Mullin took over.

Thank goodness...they've been a headache for us in basketball. Glad that is coming to an end.

Michigan could have done much better. This is so odd. Pitino would have been better.

I don't really understand the dislike for this hire. Howard was widely considered a legit up and comer in the NBA and a strong contender for open HC spots.

If he keeps the coaching aspects that made him a name, then adds some solid assistants who can recruit, UM has a good guy for a long time.

Michigan wouldn't hire Cooley because he has a skin disease and a Michigan man would never have skin issues

Howard isn't a fit.

What Penny is doing would never be allowed by Holier than Though Michigan alumni. According to Michigan alumni Greg Popovich isn't welcome to coach there because he once beat Michigan in a recruiting battle.

So Howard will help recruit inner city Detroit and Chicago which are all players that have handlers who Beliene wanted nothing to do with?
