The contract extension Dabo Swinney just signed with Clemson was just $7 million short of nine figures. Yet, he still has an issue with “professionalizing” college sports.

The coach of the defending national champions has staunchly been against the idea of college football players getting paid. Now that Swinney has gotten paid more than any coach in college football history, his opinion on players getting a piece of the college football revenue pie apparently hasn’t changed either.

In an interview with ESPN.com, Swinney discussed and downplayed the idea that he could go back to Alabama, where he played and was an assistant, whenever Alabama coach Nick Saban hangs it up. He then said nothing was guaranteed when it came to the future of college football or his future at Clemson.

"Who knows what's going to happen down the road? I have no idea," Swinney said. "I just try to be great where my feet are. That's my focus every day. Who knows? They may do away with college football in three years. There may be no college football. They may want to professionalize college athletics. Well, then, maybe I'll go to the pros. If I'm going to coach pro football, I might as well do that. I may get a terrible president or a terrible AD one day. I don't know. I have no idea what's down the road. But I know what we have at Clemson is special, and I wanted to make a commitment to the university. That's what the message of the contract was."

It’s not the first time that Swinney has used the term “professionalize college athletics.” He got roasted by comedian John Oliver for his stance against paying players back in 2015.

“As far as paying players, professionalizing college athletics, that’s where you lose me,” Swinney said four years ago. “I’ll go do something else because there’s enough entitlement in this world as there is.”

If they start paying players openly, Bama is screwed.

You know Clemson’s administration really wishes he would stop saying things like “who knows what will happen in the future” or “I have no idea what happens down the road” lol. They are probably thinking “for the money we are paying you, it would be nice for you to at least lie and say Clemson is my forever home”

That’s not really what he’s arguing.

He’s saying “what’s the point of college sports if they’re just another professional league.”

I'd love to see that shite. He won't out talent NFL means and his stupidity as a game manager will be exposed to the masses.

Wait, he's going to leave CFB for the NFL because of entitlement issues?

You're thread title makes no sense. If he was worried about entitled and spoiled athletes, he'd leave CFB to go fishing, not the most entitled league behind the Premiere League and NBA.

The ironic thing is that NFL players won’t be as subservient to him and his antics like college players.

It's not a fashionable opinion to have, but I definitely agree with him. College football has lost its luster from a neutral point of view as it is, in recent years. If amateurism and the concept of being a student give way to paying players like professionals on a wide scale, it's going to lose a lot of the distinction it has with the NFL, to me at least. In a separate but somewhat similar vein, we are seeing this type of phenomenon kind of play out with the game day experience also, when piped in shitty rap or country music is played instead of the band, and how corporate it feels now.

The Clemson football program was brought into the FBI basketball trial last week when men’s basketball assistant coach Steve Smithwas caught on wiretap discussing the recruitment of Zion Williamson, as well as Dabo Swinney’s program.

Smith said of the football program, “That’s why football is so successful, is if you do it and use resources at Clemson, like you can really keep everything tight,” according to trial updates from Matt Norlander of CBSSports.

Officially paying players would cut into the heavy bags that get 5 and 4 star kids to traverse the country to go to a big dairy farm in Clemson, SC. I'm sure he hates it

No shite he’s against players getting paid. I’m sure all coaches are. Gets rid of their edge in recruiting.

Sly way of claiming ignorance to the fact College Sports is nothing more than Semi-professional sports already.

Smart man. He acts as he truly believes or doesn't know that his players are making any extra money.

Dabo learning the political game I see.
