Charles Barkley Calls Out Media For Bias Against Small Market Teams

More impressive was that tough question Jay Williams followed up with.
Barkley is asked what he thought of NOLA getting the first pick, he goes on to say how disappointing it is to see everyone whine that he didn’t get to a major market, and Jay Will follows up with “are you going to beat Kenny in the race to the big board tonight?”
Jay Williams has done this long enough to know that you have a major personality on your show and he’s gone “off script” a bit. Follow up! Ask him what he’d say to Anthony Davis if he saw him today. Ask him if he thinks superstars can get everything a major market offers while playing in a small market. The producers at Get Up who allowed that group to whiff on that opportunity should be ashamed of themselves.

No, the media just hates teams with no history and no fan base being giftwrapped a second superstar in six years. The Pacers, Jazz, and Bucks are all located in small markets and the NBA media never had any issues with those teams.

The national media treated new Orleans and the Pels like a cheap slut who's ok for the occasional hookup (Super Bowl, All-Star game), bet certainly no one you'd get serious about.

Even if you take away the history and small market aspect, the Pelicans have had two winning seasons in seven years with Anthony Davis. The Pelicans basically wasted Davis' prime years similar to how Minnesota squandered Kevin Garnett's talents for over a decade and they were awarded Zion Williamson for their efforts. With their recent history, they're probably going to waste Zion's talents as well. It's fairly aggravating to watch from afar unless you're a Pelicans fan.

He makes a great point about having the stars only playing together in big markets not being a sustainable business model. Too often player fans, bandwagon fans, and fans of big market teams just write off the complaints of small market fans as jealousy or whatever, but if you have a league where small markets know for a fact they will never contend, that's a quick way to kill a sport that is burgeoning globally.

Are they just supposed to lay down and wait for incredibly good fortune like San Antonio? And we're not even that small of a market tbqh
and even we weren't immune to the modern NBA landscape facilitating stars bolting, and we'd feted Kawhi more than even AD.

And the Lakers have one winning season and won ZERO playoff games during that period and they had Kobe or Lebron for most of it. Seems like Zion would be a waste there too. Knicks with the same number of winning seasons as the Lakers but they at least won a playoff series.

I’m tired of this rhetoric. “The Pelicans have sucked for 7 years with Anthony Davis so they’ll suck again with Zion.”
1. The Pelicans have corrected and are correcting the foundational issues that have plagued them previously. It’s naive to say that they will suck in the future because they have sucked previously.
2. It’s silly to suggest that it’s unfair that the Pels got AD and Zion. It’s the lottery. Most of these teams suck and have sucked for some time. The Lakers and the Knicks have been hilariously bad for some time. Why do they deserve Zion any more than anyone else?
3. The Pelicans hardly wasted AD’s prime years. He’s just entering his prime. We’ll judge his prime in 6 years or so.

But you all don't mind crawling like dogs to the Lakers, Bulls ,Knicks & Warriors for those subsidy checks that allow many small markets to keep their franchises? Those 4 teams easily generate most of the leagues revenue.
Big market teams should re think & renegotiate revenue sharing if small markets are going to continuously whine & villainize them while taking the subsidies.

The Pelicans surrounded AD with the following players and coaches. I am not saying he has had the Warriors pieces around him, but it isn’t like the Pelicans didn’t try to make a team around him.
Eric Gordan (considered part of Houston’s top complimentary players)
Jrue Holiday (has been called the most underrated player in the league, elite all around player)
Ryan Anderson (solid complementary player with Pels that got huge contract)
Nicholas Mirotic (starting for Bucks and constantly talked about as a solid complementary player)
Julius Randle (constantly discusses as a young piece while with the Lakers)
Rajon Rondo (considered one of the league’s best PGs during his career, was discussed constantly in the media)
Demarcus Cousins (all-NBA caliber player)
Tyreke Evans (RoY, solid complimentary piece)
And coaches Monty Williams and Alvin Gentry who are stilled valued across the league.

There’s probably substantially less revenue to share without the teams who would operate in the red without it. The Lakers need the small markets, just as the small markets need the Lakers.
Either way, what are the small markets supposed to do? Bend over for the big markets because they’re big markets? frick that.

Kawhi Leonard was a complete shock to both fans & media & there was no media narrative to steal KL from SA. KL took much criticism from fans & media for demanding a trade. Was it the same "landscape " & media conspiracy pushing the speculation about Porzingas leaving big market New York? Constant speculation about KD & Kkay from the Bay? Jimmy Butler from Chicago & Philly? Kyrie from historic Boston?
Yet the highly subsidized smaller markets always see a conspiracy to steal "our players" when free agent rumors begin.
