St. George: BTR: 1st ‘taxes will go up’ Now ‘brace for cuts’

The Together Baton Rouge Bunch tried to scare the St. George crowd by first stating that ‘your taxes will go up!’
This, in spite of the fact that St. George gives BTR $50 million more than it receives. The ‘taxes will go up’ scare tactic has been proven to be a lie.
Now, BTR officials are telling its departments to get ready to cut their budgets by as much as 45% if St. George passes.
Hmmm .... Sounds like the BTR people been fibbing about the ‘taxes going up line.’
What are you Louisiana Baws doing? A couple of bills in the legislature just died in committee that would force a parish-wide vote. All good for St. George.
Mayor Broome is whining on TV about it, seemingly not to show any love for those in St. George or their concerns.
Seems like a ‘Baton Rouge Civil War’ going on but St. George is winning, as it seems like it should.
How will this end? There is an October vote. BTR has hired a foul-mouthed, and elderly attorney to ostensibly sue and fight its own citizens over this.
Has a new day dawned? BTR sued Central City and lost that one too. Will history repeat itself? Will BTR be forced to tax Exxon to survive?
Crazy times on the bayou. This ex-pat is watching from far far away but interested in opinions from those on the front lines.

With a City of St. George.

I don’t mind if my taxes go up if the money stays in my community. The problem is they always use the middle class money to fix up the shitty areas of town. In five years they’re shitty again because there is no pride in those areas.

The problem with BTR is that the taxes go up anyway! Constantly. Every year. And the StG people never get shite to show for it.

I can't even begin to tell you how fed up people in the SG area are with BR and their antics towards this movement.
I really think it will pass, but if it doesn't, expect a lot of people to throw in the towel and leave.

From what I have seen, I think there is a chance that the taxes of those in St. George may stay even or go down.
$50 million over what is being used in the area is being sent to the ‘other parts’ of BTR.

I’m hope StG will be a gated community that requires a retinal scan for entry.
And the BR taxes will only go up as the cost of supporting a huge bureaucracy keeps rising as those on the gravy train lock in guaranteed constantly growing retirements.

I understand your point about BTR's taxes going up (they likely will) but nothing has been proven a lie. STG's taxes WILL go up significantly. You'll be duplicating every part of city government BEFORE any services are even provided. Honest budgeting clearly shows this but the STG "leaders" gloss over it because they wish to keep the emotions high so that they get a win.
Don't get me wrong -- the people that live in STG do have legitimate reasons to be frustrated. But, the answer isn't to split up the city (and duplicate even more government). Think people.

I honestly believe the dismissive attitude that kip HOLDEN took to the people living in the St. George district started this rift. When Alton sterling happened and the police were thrown under the bus for a known drug dealer and violent felon, and racism was thrown out as the reason, it made the gap even wider.
Then all that signature gathering and counting bullshite happened the first go around and the people in the St. George area, who were initially not united or decided on how to proceed, basically banded together and want to give the middle finger to the EBR government.
From where I stand, I am worried about a lot of money leaving BR and the city plummeting much more rapidly into becoming a highly taxed shite hole, but with the incompetence shown by the government, and the fact that a certain contingent will never, ever vote for a leader that can actually begin to fix the problems, I want out.

What Parish will the city of St George be in?

And things like BREC, Library, Council on Aging aren't going to change anyway because they are Parish-wide taxes.
At least not until they come up for another vote.
And the EBR school taxes won't change either until an ISD is formed.
I also pay taxes for parish-wide things like Mosquito Abatement, EMS, and Mental Health Crisis Center that won't be affected.

Is that why the EBR own economists say that StG will ONLY be $14 million in the black from day one, even with paying EBR for all of the resources required (fire, police, trash, water)?
How can StG be splitting up the city when the people
In StG are not even part of the city currently?

They were doing this same argument yesterday at the senate hearing. It’s a complete contradiction but they can’t help themselves.
1) St George won’t have enough money to operate on its own.
2) the rest of EBR won’t have enough money to operate if St George “leaves”
It can’t be both, you idiots.

People in the proposed St. George (or people like me who are in no-man's land) are already paying for all of those services based on their current taxes... that's not going to change all of a sudden.

‘City Government’ is the only duplication.
Parish stays the same. Sheriff patrols are the same. Fire is the same.
What does St. George need from the City? A failed downtown library? More bureaucrats? Most services can be privatized and a City Manager can be hired.
This is how modern cities are run and organized. The way BTR is run is understandably frustrating to those in St. George.

Libraries are already a parish-wide tax. There's at least one branch within St. George... I think the Bluebonnet Library is outside of the second boundary.
