Does this pick up where the book universe left off? That would be kinda key for me.
Anything that supports the film version and its inexplicable choice to rewrite the ending can go to hades.

Good question, though I believe it takes place many years after those events.

I don't know. I feel like what they did in the movie worked better for a film than what the comic ending was.

Can't really seem to find an answer for this, but Jeremy Irons is playing Ozymandias, so it's definitely years down the road.

Why do you think this? Budgetary constraints is the only valid reason I can come up with.
It is antithetical to the story in so many ways. It makes zero sense unless you want a dumbed down ending that is more satisfying to the masses (ie, the morons who brought their kids to see it).
It's also a real head scratcher considering you're making an "action" film and you pass on the chance to create a giant sphere shaped organism that is actually a living bomb that will kill millions while simultaneously brainwashing any living survivors that they were attacked by aliens? I MEAN WHAT THE frick?

Cant wait for this.
Takes place 40 years later I think.

There's your answer.
But there was no way they could include the build up to the engineered creature in the film. Couldn't include the disappearances of scientists and whatnot. Couldn't include the in story pirate comic about the captain that goes mad or whatever.
Far easier to present a superpowered person and an incredibly intelligent man that learned to mimic his powers with technology in order to bring people together than engineer some alien threat.

I am probably in the minority, but I love the movie.

Damn. That looks fricking cool. I didn't have much faith in it, but I'm kind of excited now.

How much of a split is there on 300 or Dawn Of The Dead?

That's my only real concern. I don't want to love this thing only to watch it meander into nothingness.

Lindelof goes on to say that the series will not be a sequel and will be an original, new story that will “vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates” and how it will ask new questions and will, most importantly, be contemporary.
quote:
“We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago,” Lindelof said. “Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted.
quote:
He continued, “They will, however, be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools not to sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened. And so it will be with ‘Watchmen.’ The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica.”
ETA: Dave Gibbons reaction to pilot script:
quote:
Co-creator Gibbons recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his thoughts after reading the script for the pilot. “I don’t think it’s gonna be what people think it’s going to be,” he said. “It certainly wasn’t what I imagined it to be. I think it’s extremely fresh. I’m really looking forward to seeing it on the screen. I’ve been resistant to the comic book prequels and sequels, but what Damon’s doing is not that at all, it’s very far away from that.

I watched that trailer and my response was “What the frick was that?”
Based on what I’m seeing, we basically are getting V For Vendetta with Rorschach masks instead of Guy Fawkes masks.
