Back in 86, millions of people tried to make one continuous human chain from coast to coast. I remember that from New Mexico to east of Los Angeles, it fell short.

No. Pretty sure I mocked it as my 15 year old self would have done. Teens are assholes and I was a regular teen.

No, I only participate in Hands at America's Drive In

Sounds stupid, but you can't knock it.

The event raised about $15 million for charities after operating costs.

I was 17 and laughed when I heard about it. This is the first I'm hearing it wasn't successful, that's how much attention I paid to it.

All that hippies turn 40, feel good crap was the rage in the mid 80's. Live Aid, Farm Aid, songs with 100 top 40 singers, etc.
Hand Across America was weak.
Hand Across America was weak.

Was just something on the news one night. No big deal.

Bit of a clownshow, too.
"Hands Across America was a project of USA for Africa."
"The date and time chosen for the event inadvertently conflicted with another charity fundraiser, Sport Aid, which was organized by USA for Africa on the same day."

Sen. Edward Kennedy and Rep. Edward Markey led an official protest over every New England state being excluded from Hands Across America in spite of the fact New England was the most densely populated part of America. Political leaders in the South additionally weighed in against the route that was chosen to span the contiguous United States. Various protests broke out in the Upper Midwest, notably Minneapolis and Milwaukee, as well as northwestern cities such as Portland and Seattle. In Hawaii, actor Tom Selleck and Sen. Daniel Inouye led a counter Hands Across Hawaii program that was held to remind mainlanders that "Hawaiians are Americans, Too!"

My aunt participated in Memphis. She worked for the city's health department as a nurse practitioner back then.
