Article

The article is a foreign language, but here it is below translated into English via Google.

quote:

The money received and the best commissions in the Epic Store do not convince developers. Attacks in response to Borderlands 3 exclusions, Metro Exodus, Control, The Outer Worlds and more are backing developers.

The purchase of exclusives for the Epic Games Store is giving too much to talk about due to public reactions. For practical purposes, it is installing a launcher more than millions of people have to play Fortnite, and developers receive money that helps them become more viable. But the human being is an animal of customs and the games that end with a certain exclusivity in the Epic Games Store end up being targets of criticism.

Fear of criticism is causing developers not to accept deals with Epic Games
This exaggerated behavior and very childish for not wanting to open more than one launcher, extended to a certain paraboia that Epic Games sells data or spy for other governments is giving developers misgivings. A small or medium-sized team can benefit from an income of money in exchange for making the exclusive game of a digital store whose download has a zero cost. Phoenix Point received two million dollars and some larger games will receive more, without exemption from payments for the use of the Unreal Engine.

But the money could not repair the damage to the brand that will receive several games. A developer of Rise of Industry commented on his Discord channel that they received an offer from Epic Games and that possible criticism from users made him reject the offer. The developers of Factorio also had this dilemma when Epic Games contacted them to make the game become an exclusive to their store.

There is also the problem that the game will sell considerably less than Steam when fewer people get to be sold in a single store. Although this was already an initial problem when accepting exclusivity. Users are being vocal about their decision to make an alleged boycott to Epic but this behavior is only hurting developers to whom better terms of payment than Steam, better visibility and an exclusivity agreement that assures them money could help them make the most profitable games without that implying harm to the players.

I mean, this isn't really surprising. Even though most of it are spoiled gamers throwing temper tantrums bad pr is bad pr at the end of the day.

People who want to play a game on epic fine go for it. I can wait until the exclusive comes off and it's available on steam because that's my preferred way of playing games.

I'm not gonna argue. I'm gonna throw out this tidbit I learned over the weekend.

Fortnite had an unvaulting event and all the players could vote in game on which gun to bring back. Based on all social media, Reddit, and general feelings the tac sub was going to be a clear favorite. This was not the case. There was another gun that majority of the above sources hated and that was the drum gun. It rewarded bad habits, poor planning, and catered to new players.

When in the event, players had to melee the column which represented the gun to vote for. The top two were tac sub and drum gun. However, the ratio from sub to drum gun was about 1:20.

The point is, the outward appearance of what you think is happening in a community is not even close to reality. Relatively not many care about the launcher.

I agree. And I wasn't the one that downvoted you either.

The developer of Factorio was on Reddit the other day talking about his move to say no to Epic when they wanted him to go exclusive. It's reality.

CD Projekt Red also came out publicly and said they have zero interest.

Epic just bought Psyonix (Rocket League) and will be removing it completely from Steam after the acquisition. You will still be able to run the game from Steam, but future DLC will not be available and you won't be able to purchase the game on Steam. They're also removing the support for the gigantic library of Steam Workshop training maps because the EG Client doesn't have that kind of support. (The whole reason there's a "curveball" mutator option in the game is because of the success of a player-made workshop mod that added it to the game first). It's being received exactly how you think it would. Yeah, Epic is just looking out for the devs and players.

That could just as easily have been a PR stunt designed to get people to buy the game to support a "good" developer who isn't forcing you to choose between launchers.

Rocket League being bought and moved is a huge deal, but I think anyone who wanted Rocket League on Steam already has it. Game has been on Steam for years and has been marked down on sale many times. Big problem is the lack of future DLC though.

And it's unreasonable to ask someone to buy the game and the DLC again on Epic just to get future DLC.

shite we are getting to the point where consoles are going to provide the least hassle of a gaming experience.

Probably because they have their own launcher, GOG Galaxy

It's absurd. Especially for a game that has already been out for 4 years.

Another huge issue is the loss of Steam Workshop support. That's a huge deal in Rocket League. AlphaMod will get you banned once the switch happens, too.

Fair enough. I've been out of the console race for a while. I don't miss paying for online services and games on PC often go on sale often. But all this DRM crap. Consoles have Origin and shite, but it doesn't seem to affect much other than registering the game as a way of combatting Gamestop selling games used

Edit: i wasn’t the one who downvoted you btw. Everyone can have their opinion.

This is The Devil Wears Prada and Steam is Meryl Streep.

This kind of stuff is why I won't buy a PlayStation 4. Glad to see other gamers feel the same way about it.

It's funny isn't it? There are a lot of games I want to play, but don't because I dont want TWO physical pieces of hardware because I already have an Xbox.

However with an extra launcher, I wonder how fricking sad it must be to download an extra launcher to play a game....

I have 4 or 5 pinned to my taskbar. Just have to remember what games are on what. Slight "inconvenience", but I'm not playing a lot, if any, multiplayer games so where my friends are at doesn't really concern me. The 2 or 3 I consistently play with, we know how to find each other.

I feel like with origin I'm constantly having to turn off its in game overlay. I don't give a frick if you start playing BFV while I'm playing PUBG, I don't need a big arse pop up in my bottom right showing me

I keep forgetting to turn it off on start up.

Whenever I was installing Jmurdahs SSD, it was a pain in the arse to try and find all of his downloaded games to uninstall them

The horror.

Yet most people bitching have no problem owing a PC, Xbox, PS4, and Switch; and probably now VR headsets.

But extra launchers?

At the end of a day its an extra program and I am willing to bet your PC has over 100 already!

Not including windows pre-installed apps:

1. Chrome
2. Discord
3. Steam
4. Origin
5. Battle Net
6. Epic
7. Minecraft
8. PTCGO
9. OBS
10. Logitech Gaming Software

I've always said console exclusives suck for the gaming community. Only reason I have an xbox one is for Halo MCC (eh and a 360 since I still have a NCAA 14 dynasty), but that's coming to PC soon, so I won't need it anymore
